Default Your thoughts on Guild Jumbo Junior

Always been curious about small jumbo size. I've only seen yamaha small jumbo's locally. I'm not into englemann spruce tops found on a lot of the yamaha's. Recently saw a guild jumbo junior on the net. If anyone has tried them, can you give me your opinion?
Thanks for the help!

I have never played the jumbo jr guitar but I have played the jumbo jr bass. If the guitar is as cool as the bass it should be a winner.

I've played a couple. The Jumbo Junior is a cool guitar for a good price, but lags behind the GS Mini in the tone department (IMO). I'm not saying bad, just not up to speed with the Taylor.

Here's a decent comparison video with a GS Mini:

Played one and didn’t rate it. Nowhere near the GS Mini in term of sound.

I love the Guild jumbo jr. I’ve tried the maple version and not the mahogany but found it quite responsive. I had a mahogany GS mini briefly and didn’t care for it. I find the Jumbo jr a great alternative to the GS mini. For a couple hundred less it’s the better deal in my opinion and makes a good small size guitar.

I wonder if Guild was not a little to late with this model, and the big wave for getting this type of guitar has gone by. It seems to me that a lot of people who want a smaller guitar are going with OMs or parlor size models instead.

Hi nf

What do you consider the size of a full-jumbo and small-jumbo to be? Which dimension is the qualifier for you?

Different brands have different measurements for jumbo, small jumbo, mini-jumbo etc.

Before this gets too far, here is the definition of "Jumbo" according to Webster on-line (for those not in the know, it is a dictionary) :

"Definition of jumbo
: a very large specimen of its kind"

"Other Words from jumbo:
jumbo adjective"

"Synonyms
behemoth, blockbuster, colossus, dinosaur, dreadnought, elephant, giant, Goliath, leviathan, mammoth, mastodon, monster, titan, whale, whopper"

* * *

The original "Jumbo", circa 1935, was a very large body guitar designed by Gibson from specs sketched by Ray Whitley. His original custom designed guitar inlaid with his name now resides in the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville. It was a spruce top with a rosewood back and sides.

* * *

The use of "small" in conjunction with "Jumbo" is an oxymoron, as would any other adjective referring to size, as "Jumbo" relates to size by definition. Thus a "full-jumbo" is redundant and misleading as it implies otherwise is possible.

Having said that, it appears that the word "Jumbo" has become accepted parlance in the world of guitars, and that the word once defined as a size has been re-tooled primarily as a shape and not a size. Thus we also have "medium" size jumboes too.

So how about some new terms to differentiate the species.

"Jumbo Junior" has a nice alliterative ring to it, so let's use it for the mini-jumbo size. Think 14" lower bout.

I would submit "Jumbette" for the small-jumbo. Think 15" lower bout.

How about re-naming the medium-jumbo simply a "Jumbo". since it's the median entry. Think 16" lower bout.

And the "full-jumbo" can now appropriate the descriptive adjective of it's distant relative, the elephant, and henceforth be know as the "Bull Jumbo". Think 17" lower bout. This is the size of the original Gibson J-200.

* * *

So the question is, is this a continued corruption of the English language or an etymological evolution?

Bull or No-bull?

Bonus points if you know why a J-200 (or SJ-200 as it's sometimes known) has that nomenclature.

Don

For the record, all my Jumboes are of the 17" variety, except for the Alvarez which has a 16.25" lower bout, but should then retain it's "jumbo" nomenclature since it is really a medium size. I have been rating it a "sm" for small, since it not a Jumbo, but something smaller. It also does not share the classic Gibson jumbo shape, but it's shape actually more closely resembles the shape of the Grand Orchestra. Maybe the Grand Orchestra can be rated a "NuJumbo"? By the way, the rosewood Grand Orchestra is louder than a rosewood J-200 with the same exact strings on each one. Then we'll put 12 strings on a rosewood Grand Orchestra . . .

Maybe "Bull Jumbo" can be contracted to "BeJumbo", or should that be a bling-related term? "BeJumboed"? Hmmm . . .

I have always had a problem identifying the size of this guitar. The word jumbo is often associated with elephants so what is a Jumbo Junior, a baby elephant or in this case a baby guitar? I know it's not but this is what first comes to mind when I hear that term.

Steadfastly,

Go back two steps to post (reply) #12 and all obfuscation will disappear.
