Early attempts at recording with Adobe Auditon
This is the older 1.5 version. I recorded 2 dread guitar clips.....one using a small diaphragm instrument condenser mic and one using large diaphragm. Not sure which I prefer. There's a marked difference in the recordings. Be warned that these are certainly not high end mics.......
Small (SHS S-72)..... http://soundclick.com/share?songid=8790098 Large (SHS S-71)...... http://soundclick.com/share?songid=8798517 Unfortunately these clips are different in volume levels as well. Still a beginner here. The large mic is very easy to get distortion with as this guitar puts out a lot of bass. Any thoughts on which sounds better? -------------------- EDIT: I've added in this MP3 as well................. Here's a real short clip of a simple G riff. There are 4 parts as follows...... http://soundclick.com/share?songid=8892552 1/ small condenser 2/ large condenser 3/ both 4/ both again but I lowered the gain on the large condenser. To my ears it's a toss up between the first and 4th part of the MP3. I think I like 4 (both mics) the best........ What do you guys think? THANKS as always for the input! I like the first recording best. It sounds more focused on the instrument.

The first one is definitely the winner. A clear, detailed sound. The second sounds dull to me.
Where did you have the mic positioned (i.e., 12th fret, sound hole, etc.) and at what distance? By the way, I'm guessing you were using the MXL condenser mics that come in a set of two? |

I like the warmth of the second one, the first sounds to sterile, like a SM-81.

Thanks Barry. Agreed....... ---------------------- Quote:
12th fret and back likely 2 feet or even a bit more as bass response can be too heavy if I'm closer. These are fairly affordable condenser mics that do come in a set of 2 with a case.....made by SHS Audio (S71 and S72). Thanks for listening! ---------------------------------------- Quote:
I agree on the warmth thing. A bit too much treble from the smaller condenser mic, but I do like the clarity. I'm still torn between the 2 actually..... |

#2 gets my vote. It is a bit warmer and, to my ear, it has more presence and detail.

This was tough. I listened with headphones several times and kept coming up with a different answer. At first I liked the second one because it seems more balanced across all the strings. The first seemed to focus more on the trebles but did seem to have clearer separation - and then some bass notes were stronger there. So in the end I think I'm going with number 1 as probably the most true to the instrument's sound.

I liked them both but I think I like number 1 better. I plan on one for vocals and and for a guitar. If you're going to use both mics I wonder how the combination will work?

Thanks for taking the time to listen, Paul. Appreciate the feedback and I see I'm not the only one who was initially undecided. --------------------- Quote:
Since you're buying the same (SHS) mics I used in this thread, as you may know the small mic is for instruments and large one is for vocals, guitar etc..... I think they would work fine in combo once you know what you're doing. The one bad thing about condenser mics is that the more input gain you use the more undesirable background noise you can potentially pick up, the most annoying being IMO breathing. Good luck with your new ventures, Roy.... |

Both clips have their pluses and minuses. If you are going to add a vocal to that I would just have to hear it to know which sounds better to me. Why not try recording in stereo and go for a fuller sound?

That's not a bad idea Rick. The thought had crossed my feeble mind. lol...... How would you go about blending the 2 mics for a guitar recording? I'm guessing small condenser at the 12th or 14th fret maybe (12" or more back from the guitar)? Where would you position the large diaphragm mic and should I pan the separate channels in different directions? Thanks for any input...... If I do this, I'll add a third clip to the OP for comparison. Last edited by 66strummer; 03-16-2010 at 12:02 PM. |

Hard to say whuch one I liked better - they're both nice. The first is clearer and crisper, but the second has more depth to it (but might be a lttle bassy/mid-rangey when you put vocals over it).
But my first impression was I liked the second one best. |
