How do I get this color and finish?
For all of you finishing guru's
How do I get this look on a mahogany guitar? Is it dye? stain? I have no idea how to go about this. Thanks in advance Stu reverb-res.cloudinary.com/image/upload/a_exif,c_limit,fl_progressive,h_620,q_85,w_620/v1401466673/etnubvdpitze1dwdvgyf.jpg

Analine dye would be my preference. A penetrating oil stain can obscure the grain a bit and can have a negative effect on tone.

I'll second aniline dye and from that pic it looks to have a dark grain fill as well perhaps a oil base grain fill.

Two possible ways. A stain or dye applied directly to the wood with a dark brown paste grain over the sealer. Or it could be a dark red/brown paste filler applied directly to bare wood acting as a stain and fill in one application.

I got something very similar by using LMI microbead filler, the darkest one, and and a coat of shellac tinted with transtint burgundy
