Default JBL IRX108BT Compact Powered Speaker marked down from $400 MAP to $250

I've been using a single QSC CP8 high and behind for over 5 years. This slightly larger, and 3+ lbs. lighter speaker has interested me (I'll be 67 in July and lighter is better). It has an auto off function like the original QSC K1 series, Bluetooth, and two inputs that have enough gain for microphones (handy when you use the back side mixer as I do for a duo, my CP8 only has one). If you are doing a permanent installation, the push button on/off might not be a "feature" for you. They are being blown out by two Brooklyn retailers as "open box" unused for ~$250. I went with the first link pasted here:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/15599795597...Bk9SR5aWuPqHZA

https://www.ebay.com/itm/30562016045...Bk9SR5aWuPqHZA

It showed up yesterday (1 day of FedEx ground Brooklyn to Allentown) and I like it. My old CP8 is going to be retired. The sound is fine by the standards of the CP8 and the build quality seems solid (closer to a QSC CP series than a low end brand such as Alto, Harbinger, Behringer, etc.). I also confirmed my low end Beaudens power bank (only 165 watt-hours and 5 years old) can power it with no issues. It's turn-on power consumption spike (all of our stuff does this to some extent) seems to be compatible with a low end AC battery power station.

With no proof, I suspect this is "gray" inventory left over from the closure of Sam Ash, which is headquartered in Brooklyn. The unit I received was very clearly factory sealed and never opened. I can't imagine this deal will last too long.

We rehearsed yesterday using the IRX108BT as a bass amp. In this application, a noticeable step up from the CP8. Our next gig is Friday and I’ll report back.

Thanks for sharing Jon.
I’ve been looking for a “decent low cost” speaker to use
For a variety of purposes- this one looks like a great deal.

Will use as a stage monitor for gigs,
as a sound system for my studio and also see how it works with my
Tonex One Amp pedal based electric rig.

I bought mine from Pro Audio Star $249 free shipping.

Worked well last night at a three set outdoors winery gig. As I mentioned previously the bass guitar is clearly better. Probably observer bias or being forced to explore its backside volume settings (we use an XLR-Y for two SM58s and a passive mixer for our two line level instrument pedal feeds with no other mixer), I thought the vocals were clearer. I never changed it from its power-on flat EQ setting.

I had to try an irx108BT. I had a chance to unbox and test mine today.
I just put it on a speaker stand in the 'flat' setting and plugged in by my
Notepad-8FX. (Acoustic Guitar + vocal). I set the channel Gain to noon, and
the Master Volume to about 2:00 in my upstairs practice room.

I really like the speaker...nice and sweet with plenty of detail. The top & side
handles and 17.4 lbs make it very easy to set up and move.
To my recollection, it sounds much more robust than an S1 Pro and
richer than a cp8. It reminds me of a DBR10 with way better
ergonomics.

It may have a slightly thinner, less robust presentation than my higher
powered RCF Art 708A mk5 and QSC K 8.2, but at less than ear splitting
levels, I don't think one would notice.

I think the irx108 will serve me nicely for a small gig I do monthly where my
Pro8 sounds fantastic but is overkill. It will also be a light weight backup,
as well as daisy chained to my Pro8 for more power (gotta test that).

I will include my signature to give you an idea of the gear I use and like.

It was a short honeymoon. Now the speaker will not turn on. I press the
on button, it blinks then goes out. I replugged the power cable......still
does not work :-(

The speaker uses a long press to set the auto power off mode. Have you tried a short press, and waiting the 3 or so seconds it takes to boot? I think I ran into this problem when enabling and disabling the power down mode to see how that worked. It seems like long, but less than the 5 seconds to switch the mode, does not turn it on. And multiple short/long presses in succession (shorter than the boot interval) also does not work (my natural frustration driven reaction...).

BTW, the power down interval is ~20 minutes if Bluetooth is connected and hours otherwise, when that feature is enabled.

After sitting unplugged awhile, i was able to power it up again and continue
testing/listening. Jakestone suggested a Factory reset, and I did it,
I think....hard to tell. It may have helped, since after the reset, I have been able
to get it turned on.

Yes Jon, .5 second press to turn on and wait for it to boot.
A quick press of the power button to turn off and wait for the lights to go out.
Yes, it takes patience to wait & watch the lights. :-)

I found some info regarding disabling the auto off feature....which is yet
a third issue.
It says it works with v6 Firmware only. How do you tell your firmware
version?
The info I saw said hold down the power button for 5 seconds while plugging in the unit.
I guess I will try this later.

btw, I do not use the BT. so I probably don't need to sweat this, anyhow.

Thanks for the guidance, Mike

I must have the latest firmware as the feature works as specified. With the unit off, press the on/off button for 5 or more seconds. When you release the button, if the power light is continuous and goes off, then the auto off feature is disabled. If the power light flashes on 5 times it is enabled. Regardless the unit is off after this procedure, which might be the source of your original problem... I also tested the auto shut down intervals, with and without Bluetooth connected, and that worked as I discovered with a Google search, as this is not mentioned in the manual (20 minutes with Bluetooth connected, a few hours without).

MANY mentions of the faulty on/off switch
https://www.sweetwater.com/store/det...etooth/reviews

this would have me concerned if I were planning on gigging with it. Also, no mini jack input?? What if your bluetooth fails on a gig? No hardwire option.

Since the $250 ones have run out, I suppose this is moot. For permanent installation the power switch is unacceptable (you can't leave it on and switch the AC remotely). The power down mode selection is unfortunately combined with the power switch which is not ideal before you figure it out (likely the review gets written first...).

It's not a bad idea to keep one of these around, a bullet proof 3.5mm (TRS stereo) to 1/4" (TS/TRS, Mono/Stereo/Balanced) cable:

https://castlineusa.com/index.php/ca...with-resistors

3.5mm jacks are slowly disappearing anyway from consumer and pro equipment...

Yes a 1/4 to 3.5mm cable is a good idea, but you only have 2 inputs on this speaker. After your guitar and mic you're full. If they won't offer a 3.5mm input, at least offer more than 2 inputs.

I am reporting back to let you know that power on/off has not been a
noticeable problem lately. Yes, the punch/hold/release sequence is quirky,
but you get used to it. I disabled the auto power off feature that Jon
mentioned a few posts back. My issues were probably mostly user error.
I plan to keep it, and ordered a cover for it.

I mentioned that with a mixer that I set the 'channel gain' at about noon,
and the Master volume about 2:00. I am curious as to whether the 'gain' is really gain or volume
and what other users have learned playing with the 2 controls.

Further listening since my initial post has confirmed that the RCF 708a and
K8.2 are clearly superior in sonics. But the irx108BT is good. And yes, I
would pay $50 more for a rocker power switch. :-)
