As a fan since Bat was released I've heard him say numerous times that the nickname came from when he stepped on his football coach's foot. The guy said "Get off my foot you big hunk of meatloaf" since he was such a big bodied boy. The name stuck.

Legally changed first name from Marvin to Michael later down the road but everyone, including himself, called him Meat.
