I played for about 25 years and primarily carried my clubs. In my regular Saturday morning group we rode but otherwise I carried.

When I quit playing a few years ago my USGA handicap was 3.1 and my home course has a Course/Slope rating of 72.1/139 from the Blue and 74.0/148 from the Gold (tips). My lowest score from the Blue was 70 and lowest from the Gold was 72. It's not an easy course.

Really didn’t start playing until retirement. A life of back issues and arthritic shoulders were never going to let me carry clubs. Pull carts did the trick mostly when playing with friends. Played a lot with my Dad, and carts were required. Until this year, would always walk 9 and occasionally walk 18. This year, I started playing 9 on a very flat little public course. We walk with pull carts. Feels good. The 9 hole weekly league I play in is too hilly for me to walk and we rode every week this year. Hips are starting to wear out adding a new limitation. Seems like the amount of days where cart path only is the rule of the day gets me my steps. Hard enough to be in the middle of the fairway, much less hitting shots close to the cart path. Loving the game.

1. Buy a box of balls

2. Throw half into the woods, half into the water hazards, because that’s where they’re going anyway.

3. Go to the 19th hole.

I walk/carry (4 clubs) the 3-par and cart-ride full-bag the regulation courses in my retirement community. SO full-bag walks with 3-wheel pusher or rides if it's required (tournaments & such).

Cart unless I'm forced to walk. Never give up your mechanical advantage.

20 years ago, I was hacking my way around a municipal course on Kauai with rented clubs (pulling a wheeled cart) when I spied a wee, wiry Scotsman carrying maybe 3-4 clubs in a tiny bag slung over his shoulder, more like a tube with a strap.

A local explained that he jogs the course and quickly plays through, careful to avoid interfering with anyone else - now you see him, now you don't. That, IMHO, is the way to play golf. I want to be just like him when I grow up.
