Default Upcoming new home/arena Construction project

I did a thread a couple years ago about the construction a new riding arena that seemed to have garnered some interest...

SO Even though the tread will likely be dormant for most of the rest of winter I though I would start it with where we are at so far

Through one of those " just the right sets of circumstances coming together "

My wife and I are now planning and new, ( and hopefully our last) two phase construction project .

We have acquired a new piece of raw land, and are in the pre construction process of upgrading the existing two track gravel and dirt road, and planning a new building to start in the spring (given we did not close on property until the middle of last month, and wintertime construction here is very problematic and costly) ..

Phase #1 --So besides starting to improve on the a mile of road ( so far mostly mulching sage brush and widening the upper section) we were also able to excavate the site for the combination riding arena and living quarters ( which my wife and I will move into as soon as it is feasible to do so probably next fall.

The building site sits on a ridge, at the 7800 ft elevation, (it lacks the amount of timber we have on our current property) but has spectacular 360 degree views of 4 mountain ranges .

North . View (the Gros Ventre Mt Range)

West view ( the Wyoming Mt Range )

East slightly North (the North End of the Wind River Range )

North W. view with the Snake River Mt Range -on right side,, above the shrubs and Aspen trees )

Here are some excavation photos and preliminary drawings of the Arena/Living Quarters building

It will sit running West NW to East SE on the long sides
This is the building cut facing East SE with the Wind River range out in the background

You can see the north end of the Wind River Mt to the right and the South end of the Gros Ventre Mt over the top of the dozer and grader

The total building footprint will be 120 ft wide and 250 ft long ( the main arena is 80 ft by 200 ft. then there is a 20 by 250 attached shed on the North side ,, and a 50 by 20 hay shed on south side ) The living and stall section will be elevated above main arena section .
The East SE end will open below for stalls below ( 80 by 50) and the living quarters will be above 50 by 50 = 2500 sq. ft...... The building construction will be steel

The prelim drawings with the stalls below and the Living Quarters above ( the metal siding will be darker more typical Barn Red ( sketchup Free has a limited color palette )

Here is the East elevation

The South elevation showing the glass on the south side arena and a 50 ft by 20 hay shed

Wow! Going to be amazing, I'm sure. Beautiful country indeed. Shoot, I can't even get my bathroom project complete lol. Can't wait to see as your project progresses. Have fun,

Thanks Marty well in all disclosure this will the be first time in over 40 years we will be using a General Contractor who is also a structural engineer/architect and can draw up the actual construction plans
We will however be doing the preliminary design and are starting now on the living space drawings

Sounds amazing. Are you thinking of offering riding lessons? Trail rides?

Wow, that is a spectacular location. Congratulations on your housing plans and riding arena.
7800 ft is a really high altitude to be living in. Are you used to that? I suppose if you are it's not a consideration. And a lot of people do across the globe.
After a few months you'll be able to compete in a marathon if you go down to sea level!
Looking forward to seeing the project develop.

No it will be a private arena.... In the past as second jobs my wife gave riding lessons, and I did horse training clinics but we are retired from that.

Yes quite used to the elevation the property is actually only about 10 miles (line of sight) away from our current location where the house is at 8150 ft

Our current place which will be going on the market next spring
Winter time -from the NE side of house

Fall--- House from the South side

The current riding arena/barn same basic design with open end (leeward) with stalls it is a bit smaller total foot print 96 X 180 with no living quarters

Arena/Barn sits at 8000 ft. photo shot in the fall

Actually there will be a loft but my wife has claimed it as a reading loft. But both bedrooms will 20 by 18 so there will be plenty of room for playing

I'd take that view of the Winds any day!

Cirque of the Towers is one of my favorite places anywhere.

Then when our current property sells we will do phase #2 which will be a custom very modern "industrial" style house also steel.

Based on the pics, I am guessing that you are building a few miles south of Bondurant. Beautiful country.
