Default Star Wars Movie Sequencing...

My daughter told me this the other day:

"Why did Star Wars movies 4,5, and 6 come out before 1,2 and 3?"

"In charge of sequencing Yoda was!"

Thank you, thank you, try the veal! I'll be here all week..."

Ok, that's enough for now.

It's because it's conceptualized as an "epic."

In literature, epics are frequently written in a "middle-beginning-end" format.

I read years ago that George Lucas thought the middle three stories would make for better movies and would be more exciting. Not sure if that's true or not but it made sense to me.

He was wrong.

It must be true. I was a big fan of the original three, but have not seen any the others....... at least not more than a segment or two between commercials when on TV. Now there are like 30 of them to keep straight. At my movie consumption rate these days, it will take decades to watch them all.

I think Lucas chose the original episode that seemed to have the best story for the original Star Wars movie and had no idea it would be as successful as it was. Now Disney keeps trying milking that cash cow. As far as I concerned, the cow has ran out of milk.

Simple answer: because if JarJar Binks had been introduced at the start of the franchise, it would have folded immediately.

Also, Lucas was trying in some measure to recreate the experience of serialized sci-fi like Flash Gordon that he had grown up watching, hence the in media res opening with the "let's catch you up to this point" title crawl.
