Elliott Smith. And check out the documentary called 'Heaven Adores You'
Brilliant artist, another one taken too soon. Enjoy ... in a good sad, or a sad good way! |

Check out my friend Ben Danaher. Someone Else's Lover, Taught Me To Lie, and I'll Leave You Alone are particularly good sad songs.

Nice tune Rick Ruskin!
I am indeed looking for instrumentals.... it is harder to find sad acoustic instrumentals than one might think

“Ghost” by Emily Saliers of the Indigo Girls. I try and figure out how to post a video of it.

I know the thread calls for sad solo acoustic songs, but I think it would be remiss to not mention “Because We Ended As Lovers” by Jeff beck. I think it is one of the all time great melancholy unique guitar melodies of the last century
This version has one of the coolest bass solos as well

The 'saddest' song you could possible play acoustically would be The Avett Brothers' No Hard Feelings.
Make sure you have the tissues ready to hand if you're going to listen to it... |

I understand your sentiment. It’s like playing the blues in a different genre. I’m having the same experience.
Terraga’s “LaGrima” ( teardrop) was written at a time of great sadness ( homesickness) for him. He supposedly said that it should be played so that each note falls like a tear. His “Estudio in Em” also has a rather emotional feel- if that makes sense? The same feel and musical theme - to me- can be found in Moustaki’s “Natalia”and Lance Allen’s “Raining Slowly”. https://youtu.be/tR3_bTI62MA https://youtu.be/I9xAlZm4vZg https://youtu.be/TS3_5Zc6-pk Lance has a lesson on YouTube that teaches this song: https://youtu.be/MVCQnzaWNH4 I hope that’s helpful. Cheers, Tom |

Also, any arrangement of “Sound of Silence” and many of “Scarborough Fair” have some melancholia.
The old Welsh folk song “The Ashgrove” is fairly upbeat but add the words and you get nostalgia seasoned with melancholy. |
