I do have a beard trimmer and I've been over it all once now in an attempt to look a little more respectable .... notsure I pulled it off!
What's the consensus around your neck of the woods?

I'd had facial hair for decades already. My upper lip last saw the sun during the Carter Administration, and I started sporting a goatee/circle beard in the early 80s. Beards were far more acceptable in Alaska than down here in the Lower 48, but my cheeks came in quite patchy. Was a bit irked when Grunge made goatees trendy for a period, but I've only had it off a couple of times when working for UPS doing delivery at Christmas. Goatee's take a bit of maintenance, so I'd trim and edge it once a week. Had let the beard gown in a few years ago, and trimmed it every few weeks, maybe an inch long and shorter on the cheeks. I did let it grow wild for a couple of months after covid started, but started trimming it again when we started doing court hearings via Zoom in June.

Last haircut was in the last week or so of January. Had an appointment in early March, a week or so before the madness started, but canceled it due to a last-minute hearing and had rescheduled for what turned out to be the week after the shutdown. Haven't had a haircut since, but slick it behind my ears with gel when doing court. Probably be able to keep the sides in a ponytail somewhere around October, but for now I often sport a durag to keep the bangs out of my face. As I only could find a blue bandana, I am apparently a Crip. Last time I had a ponytail was in the mid-90s. If it wasn't for the fact that I still have a full head of hair, I'd probably go with the beard trimmer guard on 2-3, like many of my legal colleagues have.

so which is trendier, long hair or the self inflicted buzz cut?

In a hipster-centric city not too far from here, I see both cuts. Usually on the same person!

Cool yup

"so which is trendier, long hair or the self inflicted buzz cut?" Mycroft

Trendier implies fashionable- I'd go for just what you feel good about

Being an ol'curmudgeon of the retired persuasion anything that requires less work is always acceptable
