"Against the Wind" by Bob Seger
This is my acoustic cover of Bob Seger's "Against the Wind" released in 1980. Bob Seger's recording features Craig Frost's (of the Silver Bullet Band) piano playing as the lead instrument. Since I am a much better guitar player than piano player, I decided to turn this into an acoustic guitar version of this song. I think this is a beautifully crafted song, and I really enjoyed making this video. Thanks for watching! I hope you are all well out there and that for you, the wind is not too strong or at least at your back. - Glenn

Glen you’re correct this is a beautifully crafted song. And your singing and playing and video production are beautifully crafted too. You seem to improve every video. As a note, the three or four videos I just watched in a row were incredible. What an inspiration this forum is.

How kind of you! Thanks so much for the encouragement! This is a beautifully crafted song and I really enjoyed putting this together. I don't often use two separate guitars as I did here for the main guitar part, but when I recorded the original guitar part I just didn't think it did a good enough job filling in the rhythm part. The first guitar was played on my Sheppard guitar, no capo in the key of G. So I did a second guitar using my Olson SJ, capo 5 in D (so of course, still in the key of G). I panned the Sheppard full left, the Olson full right. And that approach really seemed to help fill out the guitar rhythm part. I had to work at that guitar solo -- that was a little challenge. I came up with what to play in a half hour or so of fooling around, but making that solo sound good on a recording took me another 2 or 3 hours of doing it over and over, about 45 takes. I started off using a flat pick on my old Olson, thinking I could do a Tony Rice kind of thing. But it came out sounding rather tinny. So, I tried my 12-string (too brash), I tried my Advanced Jumbo (just as tinny sounding), and finally I tried the solo playing with my thumb pick and fingers, again on the Olson. That approach sounded more solid. I finally got a good take using that approach. It was a fun project with a great song. Thanks so much taking time to watch and comment. Much appreciated! - Glenn

How nice of you to listen and then take time to comment! You could do an awesome job on this song, Daniel! You have the right vocal range and great musicality! I'll look forward to hearing your version! This will be fun to hear! Regarding this song, in my mind I have always thought of this as a "piano song." I have a collection of songs from Harley Davidson called "Road Songs" and I listen to this collection often in my studio when I work out. That "Road Songs" collection starts out with "Against the Wind," and it's so appropriate. Lately I have found myself wondering, could I do something with this song on the guitar? So, I found out! Thanks so much for your comments Daniel! You be well out there! - Glenn

Much appreciated! I'm so glad you enjoyed this! It helps to have such a great song to work with! It's funny, too, that the song is sung from an "old guy" viewpoint, so it works well for an old guy like me to perform this! Take care DukeX! I hope all is well for you! - Glenn

Wonderful audio/visual production. Enjoyed hearing the process and decisions.
The song came through nicely. The sound was great. Also, the background pictures gave it all another layer. I think I'll watch again in case I missed something. Thanks for sharing. |

I'm so pleased that you appreciated the entire video and audio production. It does take a fair amount of effort to put all that together and to record the videos while also recording the audio takes. So I appreciate someone who sees and hears all this stuff. I very much appreciate your kind words and your taking time to let me know you enjoyed this! I hope all is well for you. Stay safe out there! - Glenn
