Default Richard Thompson tonight

Tonight, I saw the incomparable Richard Thompson. I was struck by his versatility, his use of many alternate tunings and chord positions and his voice…his voice was strong and clear. He’s an excellent player too. Accompanying him for part of the show was his wife Zara Phillips. And that added a bit more to the mix.

He also had a small pedalboard that added effects in just the right dose. The sound was terrific.

If you get a chance, see him!

Rick

That's great Rick! We saw him a couple of years ago....same set-up I'd say with his wife joining in. Great show.....nearby venue to us of about 500 people. We've been working these last few years to see "the legends" in music that we missed seeing years ago.
Glad you got the chance to take in his show!

Kathy enjoyed it too, Fred, and she is a tough one to please.

Infinity Hall in Hartford is also about a 400-500 seat venue.just right. I always opt for a seat in their balcony and have a birds eye view. Great sound, new facility, and easy access.

I looked up some more info on Richard Thompson is that he has pretty much put out an album each year since 1968. I first became aware of him back in the Fairport Convention days. I think Kathy was a little surprised when I told her that I had been following him for that long.

I still think he was at his best with Linda.

I’ve seen him a number of times. Love him electric with other musicians, but the best I’ve seen him is solo acoustic. Just him, his voice, and his guitar. Mind blowingly great. My wife has seen him a couple times, but can’t stand his voice. Oh well, can’t have everything…

Any day when you get to see RT perform is a good day!

I've seen him several times acoustic and electric.

The one performance that's the peak for me was watching his 2001 "Live from Austin, Texas" performance that was shown on PBS. The show was videoed and released on DVD and few even realized that he broke a B string at the start of his 5 minute solo of "When The Spell Is Broken" and did the entire solo with a broken string.

Hopefully someone will put that up on Youtube some day!

And he was greeted at the opening of the show with a couple of shouts of “Happy Birthday” from the audience But he advised the audience that he would spare us the chore from singing the traditional refrain.

Drummer Gerry Conway just died. He had played with Thompson, Jethro Tull, Fotheringay, Cat Stevens, Al Stewart, Pentangle and others on the British Folk-Rock scene.
