Default Need help with my Stills

I'm a big fan of Steven Stills' acoustic work, but for some reason I have a lot of difficulty getting his rhythyms and lead patterns down. Specifically, I'm looking for help with the lead break on Treetop Flyer - I just can't seem to find the "key" to the pattern. Thanks in advance to all.

If they just would have focused more on his fingers on the Taylorstock DVD, this post might not have been necessary.

I've thought Stills was great since I was a teenager, ya know, back when dinosaurs walked the earth, and he had hair and all his teeth....

Stills is one of the best acoustic players to come out of the sixties. Good luck with Tree Top Flyer.

I remember seeing Stills and some other guy (Neil somebody) playing at Asilomar (or was it Escalon?) overlooking the ocean in Big Sur many many years ago.
Where's my tie-died boxer shorts?

Default Stephen

I saw Buffalo Springfield up close just before 'For What It's Worth' came out ... sat in the second row of a comparatively small venue. I don't think the place was even filled! Chad and Jeremy opened the show. BS had released this tune "Nowadays Clancy Can't Even Sing' ... I liked the tune and went for it. Who would have thought almost all these guys would become icons? They played very well and Stills was the focal point. A few weeks later they had hit it big on the radio. I played in a small rock band just after that and even sported mutton chops and a fringed leather jacket ... Man, I wanted to be Stills!

Then I saw CSN live at what I recall was their second concert (first being Woodstock a week earlier). An unknown Joni Mitchell opened for them. What a night of magic. I got to talk to David Crosby on a radio show a few years ago and he recalled that show like it was yesterday! It was the Greek Theater in the hills of Hollywood. Ironically, the tickets for CSN were selling poorly. They were unknown to the public and had NO album or single out. I paid $4.50 each for the tickets through my work because our company sponsored classical music at the Greek. The night of the show was another story ... there were folks in the palms trees hooting and hollering and the place was packed! The only reason I bought those tickets was because I knew these were the guys from BS, the Byrds and the Hollies.

Stills Black Queen live, 4 + 20, Suite: Judy Blue Eyes and his solo album are my favorites. How about Stills and Jimi jamming together on the song ' Old Times - Good Times'???

Man, am I an old fart or what? All I need now is a park bench and some pigeons to feed. Wake up folks ... I'm done.

kcollins,

Ya know something?

So many times, when I get to this position trying to understand a piece I want to learn...

the artist was doing "alternate tunings"

Perhaps this is the case?

[I am not a fan of alternate tunings though many are.]

Regards,
Grm

Stills sure likes to use 'em, alternate tunings that is. . . ..

He likes dropped "D" and open "D" and "G".

Treetop is probably in a dropped or open D.

Thanks for sharing on that experience at the Greek. I so wish I could have had an experience like that !!!!!

I LOVE CSN & Y !! and the entire tree of bands and artists they have worked with !!

You may be an old fart recalling the good ole days, but I really enjoyed your story !

=)

Warm Regards,
DeadHead

Thanks gm,

Stills uses DADGAD tuning on this song (and many others). I kind of like open tunings myself, especially DADGAD. My problem is more of a rhythym one - I can't quite reproduce his timing. And the lead part is really kickin's my *ss - and the open tuning isn't helping me there.

Still nothing from Steve314...?!?! Where's he at?

His cover on the Taylorstock DVD stands out as one of the best of the Open Mic performances.....
