Default Using a slide

What is the consensus on using a guitar slide? Is it most effective on the pinky? On the ring finger?

I've just started using a slide, but I think the concensus is the pinky.

Are you talking about using a slide on your Taylor?
I have a hard time due to the curvature of the neck.
As far as slide material:Brass IMO

A better mousetrap maybe? It looks quite interesting and I like the idea of being able to switch so easily to use of all your fingers. Have many people heard of them? Pla4him seems to think highly of them. A bit on the spendy side but if it works well then it would seem worth it to me.

I wonder if I'd find a used one on eBay.

I use my ring finger my pinky was broken so it's kind of stiff but in general slide guitar is freakin hard man I need to practice that stuff but I spend my practice time doing other things. I haven't found a real fondness or sense of usefulness for it at all. I've got an ebow some people say that works great with a slide but it's a pain in the butt as far asI can tell

Many (but not all) players use their pinky. In most open tunings (D, G, and C) you can do any chording you need with your first three fingers - so the slide works well on the fourth finger. If you are playing all the notes with the slide then either the pinky or ring finger are ok, you'll use the next finger to dampen the strings behind the slide. If you are playing in standard tuning - I don't know, I could never master that. In fact, I have a hard enough time playing the solo frorm Kottke's Louise in Dropped D with the slide.

I've had pretty good luck making my own glass slides from straight necked magnum wine bottles. I get about a 50 percent yield cutting and smoothing the neck, and I like the heavy slide. better than a metal one. They fit my little finger loosely so I can slip in on and off when switching from a fretted song to a slide piece (eg Tennesee Toad to Busted Bicycle). But again, the type of slide and the material is a very personal matter - Rory Block told the story about getting a spark plug socket from her car mechanic, Duane Alman used his medicine bottle, the old blues men used all sorts of funky things. A few great modern players like John Fahey, Kelly Joe Phelps and Dave Hole play "over the top" Dobro style.

I've been stringing my slide only guitars with mediums (and like an unwound 3rd string) and my acoustics with medium/lights (slightly heavier bass strings). My 12 has mediums and is always tuned down at least to D or C#. Believe it or not, Elixers seem to work pretty good for slide - even on the resonators!

This is probably the one area of guitar playing where the first rule is that there are no rules - experiment with different materials and ways of holding the slide, as well as which finger to place it on. Have fun

80's Type 33 Dobro - stays in G
60's FG-150 Yamaha - stays in C

70's D28-12 (would like to trade for a LKSM)
