Default Single coil--why bother?

I recently bought a Dean Markley ProMag and tried it twice at an open mic. Both times the same thing happened--it seemed fine for several songs and then started to have a light hum. Now I know that they also make a ProMag Grand, a humbucking model, for not much more money. Question is, why would anyone make a single coil in the first place if this is an issue?

They sound different to humbuckers that’s why. I find sc’s have more bite and humbuckers sound fatter.

I keep a SC fishman neo d in my gig bag in case a pickup fails. I like it every now and again it picks up some 60 cycle hum but It’s only audible when your not playing.
