Default There is Something Really Wrong with the Search Function

Is it just me or is there something messed up with the search function in this forum?

I type in two terms and press "in titles only" and I get a gazillion threads with one of the terms in it, a gazillion more with none of the terms...

Doesn't matter whether you use phpBB or vBulletin or any of the others, forum search functions are poor. Always have been. Probably always will be. The coding effort to translate what the average user is capable of typing into a searchbox into functional, effective SQL is non-trivial. We are talking major expenditure here, and years of effort. If you want better search, use a search engine that has had those millions of dollars and years of effort spent on it. (For example, Google, and one or two of the others aren't bad either.) Forum software will never have search that works like a proper search engine. It's just a fact of life.

Agreed, the best way to search this forum is through Google. Type in something like; Martin D-28 acoustic guitar forum. You'll get much better results.

I've just performed a little test by googling "www.acousticguitarforum.com/" and the word "unquestionably" (just like that, with commas around both terms) and got four pages of hits in which the first three pages were all AGF threads.

I don't know if that's the best way; maybe someone else can comment.

That 'll work, Norman. You can get a further improvement by putting in your search term and adding "site: acousticguitarforum.com" (without the quote marks) or (for another example) "site: stringsdirect.co.uk", or (if you only want results from, say, New Zealand) "site:.nz", and so on.

Thanks, Tannin! That's the way I've seen but never remember when I need it.

Mods: Maybe this information can be added to the FAQ?

If everyone just learned to do straight Boolean searches early on we wouldn't have to deal with the dumbed down algorithmic searches from big companies like Google. The search function here works pretty well if you don't treat it like it was a Google search but rather the Boolean tool it was likely designed as.

Whenever I search the AGF I search in Google with the following Only hits from the AGF are returned. You can also click the "tools --> Any Time -->Custom Range" to put in a date range.
