Martin Fretboard Edge Finish
I just purchased this Martin 000-15m last night and after playing it for a bit at home, I noticed some white specs where the fretboard meets the body. I ran a q-tip over it thinking it could be wiped away but it looks like the finish started flaking off in that area. I ran my finger over it a few times and I "think" that is the extent of it (for now). Then, I noticed just above this there is another small area near the frets where it is already missing a tiny bit of the finish. I really like the guitar, so I would prefer to keep this one if this isn't a major issue but it is kind of a bummer to see something like this on day one on a brand new guitar. Is this anything to worry about? Any suggestions on what to do about it right now or should I just let it go?

You could mask off the area and carefully brush on some superglue to keep it from peeling any more or just leave it alone and call it mojo

I see a few small issues, some of the frets are not fully seated and the sanding on the neck was a bit average as they have not removed all the power tool marks.
That being said these are very small issues if the guitar plays great. As far as the small white area, just appears some of the finish has broken away, reasons why i can only sumice, but its not a deal breaker IMO Steve

Those are minor defects that could easily be touched up. My HD-28 has been my Guinea Pig for touch ups for 20 years. They use nitrocellulose lacquer on the body and a catalyzed finish on the neck. I have touched up the neck and though the nitro I use doesn't melt into the catalyzed finish it still looks good.

Thanks everybody! I have quickly fallen in love with the guitar and intend to keep it. The photos and lighting made it look much worse than it does in person.
Hopefully I didn't make a huge mistake, but I put the tiniest dab of "fingerboard remedy" on it and immediately wiped it away and it just about made the bare spot invisible. I'm not sure if that oil/wax would prohibit an actual touch up if I decide to in the future. Any recommendation for what to use to touch it up if I ever decide to? |
