I learned to edit 1/4" on Ampex 300's and 351's, where you'd pinch the tape at the edge of the "gate" rather than marking it. A good editor could edit speech faster on one of those than most people can with ProTools. When I got moved into the "new" room with an ATR 102, it sure sounded great but editing got a lot slower. But since that new room was mainly a video/music room, tape cutting was mostly confined to head and tail leaders.

Ruby tape guides! This was recording classical music at the University of Tennessee. We had a pair of Neumann M49s that was to die for. My wedding ring still bears scars from climbing the steel ladder forty feet into the catwalk every night to hang the M49s. And check out the Altecs. Bob
