I don't have any issues with a sore shoulder, but I play a guitar (Avalon) with a 16.25 " lower bout. I play seated, but wear a strap to get the neck up. Not way up like a classical, but up there. This results in the lower bout being lower and my right shoulder doesn't get pushed up.

I’ve been dealing with the same thing lately. My daughter recommended a women who a combo of sports and chiropractic, I saw her she did a great job I am much better. I do agree with others here, I work out regularly anyway so started to work on my shoulders and upper body more and also experimenting with different seating options. I may purchase a guitar seat , lots of different options out there. But everything I’ve done to point has helped greatly.
Good luck.

Absolutely some good advice. I have been having some back pain as well as shoulder pain. So I made an appointment with a spine specialist. The Appointment is coming up next week but in the interim I have started to see a chiropractor. My Doctor is very good at what he does and his adjustments have helped. But what I think helped just as much, or maybe more is his suggestion to remove inflammatory foods from my diet. It’s been several weeks and the food adjustment is a challenge but already I feel better, not just my back. Not saying it is the answer to the OPs issues but sound medical advice, as well as diet changes can make a difference (including an Asian approach)

Try sliding the bottom, the part that sets on your leg, away from your body a little. So it's at a slight angle.

I cannot figure out how to respond to the individual recommendations and questions, so just let me thank EVERYONE for the valuable input. I now have a sense of direction and some tweaks to playing position etc. to explore.

....and there's you problem, right there.
I made this video shortly after cancer treatment which made me lose over 40lbs in as many days - much of it muscle. My shoulders amongst everything else) were weakened. In fact our muscle tone loses weiht as we age, and so we need to use them more carefully and keep them strong. This might help:

shoulder pain
One suggestion if you can borrow one is to try a 12 fret guitar. It will cause you to hold the instrument at a slightly different angle and use slightly different muscles.
