Default NGD: Martin Special D Ovangkol + Question

Hi all,

I just came into a really cool guitar that there isn't a whole lot of info on. The best I can tell is that this guitar is a Guitar Center or Musicians Friend exclusive from early 2018. Gloss Spruce top, satin Ovangkol sides and back, Performing Artist neck, Richlite fingerboard and bridge, and Fishman Matrix VT Enhance. Kind of a poor man's D28, if you will.

It's a very well balanced guitar, it has a little more bottom than a dread with Mahogany sides and back, a little more midrange than Rosewood.

The question is: the guitar came used with hang tag (in last photo) and it says "Cust, D14F, Spruce Agng Tnr, Matrx" does that mean that Martin designates this guitar as a D-14?

No. The D-14 is just the Custom Shop designation for any 14 fret to the body dreadnaught.

What I call a "Custom Shop D-18" in my sig is technically classified as a D-14 as well for the same reason, it's just one with Mahogany B&S and Adi top and "18" style appointments.

Ok, gotcha. Thanks for the clarification.

Nice! I played a couple of these when they were new in the store a few years ago and they both sounded REALLY good. Don't really have anything to add regarding your question, so hopefully affirming your purchase will suffice.

This is an older post but I am posting because this is the SDOTD today and I am interested.

You still have this and, if so, how's she holding up? Also, any feedback or photos of the gig bag?

Anyone else have this guitar and care to chime in?

Thanks!

Pretty cool that you can get a forward shifted, scalloped dread within this price range. Bet it sounds wonderful. The Ovangkol looks great. Nice buy! How do you like the Fishman setup?

I just came across one of these used today. The shop wants $1100 or $1200 hundred for it… can’t remember exactly. Seemed a little steep maybe, at least compared to the SDOTD price.

That being said, the thing sounds and plays great. I was super impressed. Enough so that I’m contemplating getting it despite the fact that I just bought a 000-16gt and was about to buy a 000-15sm as well. I don’t really like dreads too often, but this one struck a chord with me. (Sorry for the pun)

I recently played the OMC version myself. Shop wanted 1400 or 1500 I think, which seems very very high. But, like you, I was impressed with the guitar.

Did you buy it? Still have it? Thoughts? I’m looking at one.
Thanks

I don't have one but I've played them at GC and they are very nice guitars. They sound great and the are very well made. And I like the pickup.

If the price is right, I say go for it!

Congrats! I used to own one of these and it was a very nice guitar. I only sold it because I bought a Special 16 and preferred that a bit because of the deeper bass and rosewood overtones, but the Ovangkol dread had a very smooth balanced tone and no real flaws.
