AT2035 vs Warm WA-47jr
I'm pretty new to recording and mostly doing acoustic guitar and vocals. I have a pair of Samson C02 small condenser mics for guitar and am thinking of upgrading my SM58 to a large condenser mic for (male) vocals. I've read a lot of good things about the Audio-Technica AT2035 which is on sale at B&H for $129 ending tonight (6/22). I was leaning that way until I saw the Warm WA-47jr on sale at MF for $199 (also ends tonight). Any thoughts on what would be a better mic for vocals? I'm leaning towards the AT2035 only because I've consistently read good things about it.
Thanks! |

You'll never know until you try them on your voice. But you might find out you prefer the SM57 on voice. I use dynamics often, depending on the song, but my voice is not stellar. Condensers can be very revealing.

I agree that the 57/58 may be what I wind up preferring, but at least want to give a large condenser a try. |

You might find this thread interesting, the beginning is mostly about 3U Audio mics, but other mics are discussed as well, including WA:

I pulled the trigger on the WA-47jr. Just seemed like for not a lot of money, I could get a lot more mic. Thanks for the help Duke!

I am guessing you will really like it and at that price point can't see how you could go wrong.
I don't have any WA products but know people who do and really like them. GlennWillow here on AGF has a number of Show and Tell videos using the big brother the WA 47 tube on vocals and it sounds quite good. Here is the Sweetwater product page for the WA47jr and there is a video comparing the jr with the tube WA 47 on acoustic guitar and male vocal https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/WA47Jr--warm-audio-wa-47jr-large-diaphragm-condenser-microphone

I like it, but being a newbie I didn't want to come back on and offer an uneducated, definitive review. I think my voice sounds a little fuller and warmer than on the SM58, but haven't done a true A/B.

The goods news about a 58 is it has a small diaphragm, more limited dynamic range, great off axis rejection, and is thus not prone to feedback and distortion on a noisy stage. The bad news about a 58 is it has a small diaphragm, more limited dynamic range, and off axis rejection , to really sound intimate and full like an LDC can.
