A Consummate Singer-Songwriter Performer
This is what it's all about whether performing your own songs or those of others. I just discovered this Verlon Thompson video a few weeks ago and I challenge any of y'all to listen to the first two songs on this video and not to keep on listening!

He looks like the twin brother of a fairly well known banjo player.....

Barnegie Hall
If you haven't seen the Barnegie Hall series that was recently on PBS, you will want to. In it, Verlon interviews a number of really entertaining songwriters. Of course, he also does one of his own songs at the beginning of each episode.

Verlon "dam" Thompson, as the late, great Guy Clark oft called him is indeed a very fine singer-songwriter and guitarist , and a faithful sideman to Guy for many years.
He's a great story teller too. I stumbled on this video a while ago and enjoyed it - but thanks anyway. Have you seen his version of Guy's "The Guitar" ?

Ok, I must confess. Verlon was just in the Twin Cities and I was able to be one of 15 folks that signed up for his songwriting workshop. He limits it to 15 so he can spend time with each one. What a gentleman. Humble. Next door. Just downright nice. Learned a few things in the class. Then, last night he put on a show during the Minnesota Fall Bluegrass Fest. What a showman. Some of the songs and stories we heard during the class or from previously watching videos. But It didn’t mean I wasn’t spellbound during his performance. It was like I had just heard em for the first time. The man can pick, the man can play. He often stops in mid song to talk about the song, Guy Clark, his life growing up or his time in Nashville, the Queen of England. His Guy Clark impersonations are hilarious. Then, the song starts up again like it never stopped. If you get a chance.... Go!
