Default Interview with Derek Gripper - 10 string, fanfret and exchangeable fretboard content!

Hello everybody,

I was in Paris (France) this past weekend to play a concert with the incredible South African guitarist Derek Gripper and I recorded this interview with him. If you're not familiar with Derek's playing then you should check him out. He's insanely talented.

He has some fascinating insights in ordering luthier-built guitars from the player's point of view that I wanted to share with you. I hope you enjoy it.

Stay tuned

Just listened to all 45 minutes; great fun. He's clearly an interesting guy.

"Libraries on Fire" is one of my fave albums - well recorded too.

Unique music, especially in the "classical" world.

I saw him live with John Williams a couple of years ago. Immediately after he launched into what he had just described as his "favourite tune", a guy in the audience started vomiting, and copiously. There was a helluva commotion (not least people trying to avoid collateral damage!), but Gripper didn't flinch. Felt real sorry for him though (...and for the guy who fell ill).

Cheers,
Steve

Thanks for posting this, Michael. Derek's kora transcriptions are fantastic.

Great work. Derek Gripper is a real talent. Also a Casimi player. Particularly like this:-

That's pretty full on! I hope you enjoyed the gig despite that... I remember seeing a heavily refreshed lady faceplate directly in front of Gordon Giltrap many years ago. I admire any performer who can keep going through something like that!
