Default Help on open D chords

Starting to get heavy into open D tuning, and I could use some help on finding sources for chords. Just the basic major/minor chords. The first position chords are easy enough to find, but I'm looking for chord shapes up the neck to add some color to melody lines. Partial barres on 5-7th frets, etc. don't seem to do the trick.

Thanks.

Have a look at http://www.looknohands.com/chordhous.../index_rb.html

You'll have to work them out yourself, but that's easy.

I found this book quite useful many years ago.

Hi zmf…

Would you please spell your version of open D tuning?

Open D (D-A-D-F#-A-D) can use both the E chord shape and a variant of the E chord shape (from standard tuning) I call a shifted-E.

Shifted E moves the bottom string fingers downward a pair of strings (pitch-wise) on frets 1-2, or 3-4 or 8-9 and sometimes frets 11-12. These mostly produce minor chords.

Shifted E shape…

Of course you can use the standard E shape too

Or combine the two

Thanks. I missed Chord House.

Larry, I spell it the same way you do.

Assuming DADF#AD.

A nice B minor chord is at the 2nd fret: Hold down the B at the second fret of both A strings. Let the open strings ring too.

Another nice B minor is at the 9th fret: Hold down the B and F# at the 9th frets of the low D & A string, and the D at the 7th fret of the F# string. Let most or all the open strings ring too.

A nice G add 9 chord is at the 5th fret: Hold down the G and D at the 5th fret of the low D and A string, mute the open D string, hold down the B at the 5th fret of the F# string and let the open A string and D string ring.

Move that up two frets and you get a cool A sus chord.

At the 4th fret, play that same fingering but play an A at the 3rd fret of the F# string for a nice F# minor chord.

Open strings are your friend with open tunings...even up the neck.

Hi, I love playing in DADF#AD for my guitar, lap steel, and banjo. So I know what I'm talkin about.
Follow this link to the most useful Open D chord chart that's both compact and presented "in keys" layout, plus more:

Hey ZMF,
I've got a pdf with tons of chords in different tunings, including open D.

That's the good news, the bad, I'm a bit of a computer novice, I don't have an ftp site and I don't know how to post it for all. It's only about 2 megs in size so it should email.

Send me your email address and I can send it to you, or if anyone else can help us out I can make it available to all.

Joseph

There are so many free chords on the internet its almost overwhelming. Good luck sorting through it all!
You might also consider a useful lesson on "Open D Tuning" minor chords.
Too many players get discouraged with "Open D" when they reach this point. I have a very useful "minor chords" lesson available at my site, to help you along.

This site has chord charts for Open D, Open G and Open C: http://thedeviltunedthisguitar.blogspot.com

Unfortunately, it seems the owner of the site stopped working on it a couple of years ago.
