I've seen him live three times this year so far. You might try reaching out to him through Twitter or FB. He's a really friendly guy and appreciative of his fans. You might just get what you are looking for. Also, check YouTube for videos.

I knew of Colin Hay from the Men at Work stuff in the 1980's. I then ran into him and his wife at a marvelous summer fair we have here in Topanga Canyon call Topanga Days ( a lovely throw back fair paying homage to the hippy-dom of the 60's). His wife Cecila has a fun band called "The Clams" who was playing as well. I then ran into him several times on the hiking trails in the canyons here that stretch out to the ocean. When he's not touring he's a steady monthly act at a club in town called Largo.
Enough name dropping however as that's not my point As someone inferred earlier he's as gentle and accommodating as a human can be. I believe he's either touring or just finishing up touring Brazil but normally I wouldn't be at all surprised if he responded to you personally. This is where I drop my standard Colin Hay disclosure. If you've not yet had a chance to see Colin Hay live.....please and by all means do. He's a magical performer, singer, songwriter and story teller that has no peer. I've never taken someone into town to see Colin that wasn't hypnotized by his show. That said try facebook. |

Quote:
We had Colin up our way a couple summers ago. He was superb -- engaging, funny, a bit irreverent, a splendid entertainer with loads of stories all told with a bard's timing and wit, and while not the greatest musician, still a songwriter who knows how to use a hook effectively. Extremely genuine and human when I talked with him afterward. Which is odd because... I recall seeing Men at Work open for, as I recall, Queen in Indianapolis at the height of MaW's fame and glory. No one -- no one at all -- was paying attention to them as the band played its 45-minute opener, and Colin was out front cursing the entire Market Square Coliseum crowd with spit and rage, calling them every name in the book the entire time for their disrespect of such a marvelous band that had traveled so far to entertain them. He was doing anything he could to get them to pay attention -- even if it meant getting in a cussin' match. It didn't work, btw -- but how things have changed for him (well, the cursing's still there, but he's a relaxed dude now, and more than just a bit heavier...but aren't we all?! ). As to the tune: Not familiar with it -- but I have worked out many of the songs from Colin's *Going Somewhere* and they're nearly all in open D. Looks to be the case here, from what I can gauge of the link Curtis sent. Worth a shot... |

Send somebody
From what I can tell he plays the song in DADGAD. I have tried it and have about 80% of it figured out. Watch the 3 or 4 videos and you will be able to get most of what he is doing.

Here's another good video showing him playing it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QfIDC2S_SPc. I agree, I believe the tuning is DADGAD. I am working out some of the tabs, haven't figured them all out yet. I am also new to finger picking, so that is a bit of a challenge for me too.

I enjoyed Men at Work in high school in the 80s and knew that Colin Hay had done some solo acoustic albums. So I just pulled him up on Spotify and listened to "Transcendental Highways" and "Going Somewhere" and I'm absolutely mesmerized! Wow - what a talented guy! I definitely want to learn some of his stuff and catch him on tour.
