yamaha fg312 12 string
thinking about an older brand name 12 string (read: cheap). not looking for that jangley sound, more of a boxy tone--leadbelly-type
nice fat neck, prefer 12 fret. slot-head a big plus i spotted one of these on line & the looks intrigue me, but i know nothing of this. i do know the ones ive seen are within my price range i would expect all lamanite, & a set up would be essential, but can anyone add any more information? sound, construction, etc... is $200.00 plus shipping okay, or would it be a waste of time & money? just nosing around & really missing my 12'er thank you for your responses

I bought a 312 II off ebay a few months ago. Paid less than the one you are considering. It plays well and sounds pretty good. It is a bit jangly but not as much as others that I have heard. It also seems a bit on the quiet side to be, but I don't use a pick. I did try a pick on it when first purchased and it was pretty loud. You can't finger pick it-the strings are really close together. All in all it is the most fun you can get for less than $150. Just my $.02

thank you Mike--let me ask; are the courses too close together, or are the strings themselves too close together & is this at the nut or nut & saddle? im sorry if i soundl ike im obsessing (i probably am), but im
really curious & very interested. never seen one up close & personal. only pictures & not very good ones at that thanks

It isn't the courses but the strings. This would be at the bridge/soundhole area where the picking is done. I have tiny hands so the fretting hand isn't bothered by the closeness. I can easily finger pick a guitar with a 1 11/16 nut width including my baby Taylor, but cannot finger pick this-but I bought it to be my "strummer" and it is good for that. As to a neck re-set --this guitar is over 30 years old and doesn't need one. I have it tuned a step low to keep some of the tension off and then capo at the first fret for playing. Hope this helps.
Mike

Lots of people like that on here, running things down but "not meaning to"
