Default Have you seen the new Line 6 modelling guitar?

Check it out here. It's "supposed" to model all theguitars listed below based on a 4 way selector switch in conjunction with an 8 notch knob, then it's got it's 3 way EQ too...
There are sound samples, too... I haven't heard them yet cause I'm not at home and don't have any speakers!

1960 Fender Telecaster Custom, 1968 Fender Telecaster, 1968 Fender Telecaster Thinline, 1959 Fender Stratocaster, 1958 Gibson Les Paul Standard, 1952 Gibson Les Paul “Goldtop”, 1961 Gibson Les Paul Custom (3 PU), 1956 Gibson Les Paul Junior, 1976 Gibson Firebird V, 1955 Gibson Les Paul Special, 1959 Gretsch 6120, 1956 Gretsch Silver Jet, 1968 Rickenbacker 360, 1966 Rickenbacker 360-12, 1961 Gibson ES-335, 1967 Epiphone Casino, 1957 Gibson ES-175, 1953 Gibson Super 400, 1959 Martin D-28, 1970 Martin D 12-28, 1967 Martin O-18, 1966 Guild F212, 1995 Gibson J-200, 1935 Dobro Alumilite, Danelectro 3021, Coral/Dano Electric Sitar, Gibson Mastertone Banjo, 1928 National Style 2 “Tricone”

For all I know, this might be old news, but I've never seen one. Looks too complicated for me!

Here's the biggie for me: It's 25.5" scale. Period. When you shift over to a Les Paul model, it doesn't magically switch to a Gibson 24.75" scale. Ask yourself: How important to me is the FEEL of the guitar. It's really important to me. I haven't tried one out because of that.

I'd never go for something like that... I like "real" tone (i.e. american strat straight into my mesa rectoverb)... not computer simulated stuff. I just thought it was incredible how much stuff they crammed into one guitar! It'd be a BLAST to spend an hour or two with in the music store!!!!!

Tried it at Guitar Center - frankly was not impressed.

Sounds like an impressive trick...but I just wonder how effective it is in reality...I mean an electric guitar generally feels very different to an acoustic...

An amp modeler is one thing (I like the POD for my needs), but a guitar modeler is entirely another. The feel of the guitar type (all aspects) is as much of the joy of a particular make as the sound. Not for me.

I've spent an inordinate amount of time with one, and I have to admit: the dobro and banjo sounds are almost enough to get me to buy one. They're a tad pricey though, and that's what I tend to shy away from...

Picture yourself buying a $500 Korean made guitar(probably made by Samick, and not exactly a bad thing) with a $200 bridge hex pickup and $300 worth of "marketing ingenuity"...AND that's what you get with a $1,000 Line 6 Variax.
I've played one while my wife listened. She knows what my guitars sound like...and she is not convinced that the Variax can "model" ANY of my guitars.

A friend of mine bought one and returned after he played out the first time. It indeed has some pretty good sounds, but to get truly accurate sounds you have to set up your sound equipment for each simulation and it gets to be a real pain.

Pretty soon everything will be simulated and nobody will ever have to get out of bed.

I am trending toward real sounds. I have a Line 6 Pod Pro, and have used it extensively in recording. It is very convenient, and gives some nice sounds. But the other day, on a whim, I decided to record a solo the old fashioned way and mic my Marshall. Wow, it sounded so good! It reminded me that this modeling mania does not replace the real thing. I am sure I would not be interested in a 'modeling guitar.'

Thumbs down

Modeling amps and guitars just turn me off. Nothing beats the real thing, especially live although recording might be different.
