Default Sennheiser MK4 experience?

For some reason I'm curious about this mic - I've been using and fully happy with a Blue Hummingbird for over a year (long time for me) but I've been thinking about trying an LDC again for live and studio on the guitars

Anyone used one?

Yes - I tested one out for a few months. Very nice mic, especially at the price point. It is not as smooth as their higher end (MKH) stuff...but more than holds it own in that price range.

Thanks - right on the verge of finding a good price on a used one. Alto Music has some manufacturer "repacks" at a nice price. Might be the way to go.

Sounds like a deal. It's already inexpensive. it sounds decent. Low noise floor, relative high output. You could do a lot worse. It's not a desert island mic, but (as I said before) you'd be hard pressed to find something that sounds better at the price point.

In the interest of full disclosure - I should mention that Sennheiser is a client of mine. I do audio work for them. That said, I have always liked their stuff. Long before they were a client I used their mics on hundreds of recordings. And my preferred live vocal mic the the e935. I just felt like I needed to mention that.

I've run straight into avalon preamps and they don't change the tone that much, you can get that tone going straight in. What he does have going for him there though is what looks like to be a good room!
