Day 6: didn't take much time to get the lick down so now I'm up to 13 bars. Next comes the turnaround. Looks hard.

My weekend is here, so back to learning. Picked it up for a few minutes this evening just to get back in the habit.

Managed to get the recording stuff together to produce a taster of Police Dog Blues. I am struggling to get all the way through without making horrible mistakes. Also struggling with singing but my record setup hasn' t got a working mic at the moment anyway.
Still, the playing is coming along and I've managed to get something recorded. :-)

Getting there! Sounds like a fairly busy piece to learn.

Nice work!

Update Day 7: Nice long repertoire practice tonight followed by the new song. After some solidifying of the first 13 bars I learned the turnaround. Looked a lot worse than it actually was. I nailed it finally and put the guitar way for the night. I like to end on a high note. So this means I have the first 16 bars down. After this it repeats with an little variation in the connecting lick. This is coming along a lot faster than I thought it would!

Ever wonder why you can play something great one day and the next not be able to do something that you were doing the day before.... Random thought

I get that too. The more you play, the less it happens.

Sometimes it comes in bug lumps, it's like the brain rejecting certain things in order to let the new stuff get beat in... If that makes sense

Worked on Shenandoah last night, still sight reading it but I should be able to record it this week to finish it up and today I actually memorized page one of Darcy's Guitar! If I could memorize the whole song it would be a miracle! I'm going with my folk guitar on that one, tuned down to D and capo II (when you get old you have to cheat on the stretches, lol)

I have been unfaithful only playing pedal steel guitar for some years now.

Found this nice thread and now I feel motivated to start practice on my acoustic. (Collings 000-2H)

My first new attempt will be Shenandoah, I hope it will be in an OK level.

I'll be back

If you have any nice arrangements of other songs to share, I will be greatful!

Getting the verse sections of "Death Don't Have No Mercy" down pretty well now. Some of the little licks in between, and especially the solo, are being difficult now. Not having the issues with staying on beat with the more syncopated measures now, so that's progress.

Well I decided to try and record my attempt at Last Steam Engine Train. I used a Tascam DR-05. This is also my first attempt at recording anything. I had the recorder laying down on my desk with the mics hanging out over the edge. I had the guitar about 1 1/2 feet away. There is a little static at the start, not sure what it is from. And yes there are some mistakes in my playing! but here it is.

Day 8: I've learned all of the parts now. Tried last night to play the whole thing through without errors but no dice. I'll try again tonight.

Thanks Doug and Barry for your comments.
I struggle with playing through without mistakes so I'm going with playing from beginning to end as my current goal.

Nice playing 000JB. I have the John Fahey book (American Primitive Guitar) but I haven't managed to get near that one yet.

Hey, it doesn't have to be perfect, that's why we're posting our work here. This is keeping me motivated to work on only two tunes and to finish them instead of doing a dozen things halfway.
JB, I will listen to your tune tonite on my computer.
