Bennie Moten was one of the greats of Kansas City Jazz. He died quite tragically on the operating table in a Kansas City hospital in 1935 when a "routine" tonsillectomy went horribly wrong. Among his many accomplishments, he's also remembered for having hired Bill "Count" Basie in 1929 to play in his band.
