LD Maui vs JBL Eon vs Mackie 12 Thump
I can get the JBL for $800 or so. The Maui appears to run $600. A pair of Thump 12s would run about $500.
Which is the best sounding, the most versatile. Which set up do I need?

Are you a solo acoustic act? If so, definitely not the Thumps, which are pretty harsh and dismal sounding compared to the higher quality Maui G2, although the price you mention for the Maui that you're considering is perhaps for the Maui 5, which I've not heard.
But it's safe to say that the Maui 5 will sound much better than the Thump, as long as it puts out enough volume for your needs. I've not heard the new EON column speaker. |

The general consensus of the forums in terms of sound/useability of the options you are looking at:
JBL Eon One > Maui series > Mackie 12 Thump Do note that the new JBL Eon One Pro has a tonne of problems so go for the older model if battery power is not a feature you need |

Really happy with my Eon One but if you go that route you'll either want an external mixer or a vocal processor to boost the level for higher output, as the gain structure is dismal.
I'm using a vocal effects processor so I've mostly forgotten that without it, you can only do quieter gigs.

I had the Maui 5 for a couple months. They can be had for $500 at GC or MF (using current coupon). The Maui is really nice sounding... Would be perfect for solo player in a small venue. Not so good for larger settings where you need more volume or head room.. But It sounds REALLY nice in small settings. I ended up exchanging the Maui5 and buying the Bose L1 compact ($850 on sale). Really pleased with the L1C. Sounds fantastic! |

I didn't try the Maui 5, but can tell you with confidence the Maui 11 G2 has quite a bit of power. I love mine, get lots of compliments on my sound from discerning musicians and get told to turn down more often than I should (running at 50%)! ha ha. It will crank if you need it to. I used it to provide sound for a benefit recently where there were probably 200+ people. Absolutely no problem.
