Default Martin tuning machine lock/cap question

Hi, I recently purchased a used Martin HD-35 (circa 1995) with Martin tuning machines with black locks(?) or caps. One of the locks is missing (low E string). It is not a problem for me but I was wondering if someone could tell me more about this part. First off, what is it and second, is it a separate part that I can order/replace or does it only come with a set of tuning machines? I have noticed that some Martin's have this feature and some do not, but I am not sure if it is an individual modification or not.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

I believe those tuners were actually Sperzel's. You might check the Sperzel web site.
