I admire any player who has that elusive magical "musicality" in their fingers. I've seen and heard guitar playing that is technically brilliant yet does nothing for me, and alternatively simple chords that moved me to tears.

David Crosby is the reason I picked up a guitar...

Mellencamp, later in his career post top 40. In this song he packs a lot of emotion in the vocal while playing very restrained, sometimes strumming just a couple strings, and a G with two fingers.

Yeah, I was gonna say Guy, too. To hear him just pick and sing LA Freeway solo is a beautiful thing.

Nice to see someone remembering Hubert Sumlin here. He has had a greater influence on the evolution of popular american music than people seem to realise.

I don't think it's fair to say that Steve Goodman played a simple guitar style. He was a great guitar player. Here he is playing ''Red, Red, Robin'', one of his traditional openers; I was actually at that show and saw him play ''City of New Orleans'' with Arlo Guthrie. Steve was a great musician in every way! |

I love John Hurt and hear what you guys are saying, but I don't think of him as simple player at all. Lot's of people can play his tunes, but very few can play them with the same groove that John had. And the tunes get a bit more complex played at his tempos!
But if simple means "not flashy" then I would agree, he was simple, and simple is good

I'm partial to Andrew Latimer, leader guitarist, and flautist of Brit Prog band Camel, as an instrumental guitarist.
Here they are playing the Royal Albert Hall on Sept 17th, 2018: And the Hammersmith Odeon (now called the Eventim Apollo) On May 11th, 1984: His touch, taste, and tone are remarkable. Incidentally, the guitar used on both concerts is the same one, an early '70s Les Paul Custom. It has been rebuilt extensively. The guitar in the pic above is the same one, after the rebuild. Bob

What a great idea for a thread. Two came immediately to mind. Swamped now, but will come back in later to add some clips.
The two players? 1) Mick Ronson 2) Nina Gerber Oh, and of course, George Harrison, the greatest of them all. Enjoying reading all the responses. scott memmer |

I have not yet seen reference to our own Jimmy Quango (for those who pay attention to the "Show and Tell" sub-forum). He is a perfect example of the "simple and beautiful" approach...
Check out his youtube channel as well as his posts in the above mentioned sub-forum. Here is his youtube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCDT...rXvES9DFWwdLnQ Tony |
