Where are all the female guitarists?
Gillian Welch
PJ Harvey Carrie Brownstein Corrine Tucker St Vincent Tanya Donnely Joan Armatrading Charro Ani Difranco Suzanne Vega Emylou Harris Nancy Griffith Just to name a few off the top of my head. Someone’s interest in arpeggiating in earnest does not make them “greater” guitarists. Last edited by Ezp; 11-25-2021 at 10:56 AM. |

Mary Spender, Taylor Swift, Bonni Raitt, Lita Ford, Joan Jett, Wynona, Nancy Wilson, and a host of others. In addition, lots of women play guitars but are more known for their voice.
I think a lot of it is that for decades, the music industry didn't know what to do with women playing guitars. They were fine with them singing, but singing AND playing? Unheard of. Joan Jett was one of the people that helped women break though that mindset the recording industry had. However, it's this mindset that prevented many talented women from being able to both play and sing, so we don't look back on those very talented individuals and thing..oh, guitar player, but instead..ohh, singer...IF they were lucky to a job in the industry.

I love the request for "Asturias" as an encore. "Asturias? Sure, I'll try." Using her inner voice to connect with her listeners. |

Sure, I'll add a few ...
Gabriela Quintero, of Rodrigo y Gabriela fame. Poison Ivy Rorschach, retired now, but legendary in certain circles. Neko Case, who's done more to popularize the tenor guitar than anybody else I can think of. There's others. A lot of them. |

Macyn Taylor
I like her covers of old British folk, but she has a wider range than that - check her out. As the Youtube page says, "Finger-style guitarist Macyn Taylor recently received her Master's degree from UW-Milwaukee (UWM) at age 19. When she was just 17, she graduated with a fine arts degree from UWM's Peck School of the Arts guitar performance program." |
