Don’t do it! Peterboroughs are great places to build guitars.

Default Ready for finish

I've got this guitar pretty well set up for finish:

Here is what it looks like dry and unfinished. I expect it to go crazy when the finish hits!

Thanks for looking!

Thanks Mike! This one is less flashy than the previous “wave” maple Josie. It’s a bit earthy and subtle. I am happy how the colors come together on this guitar and the wonderful figure has depth and interest. Ovangkol is a strong sounding tonewood, more toward rosewood. All the boxes are checked!

Thanks for commenting!

Default Fourth Guitar for Woodstock

I am taking four guitar to exhibit at the Woodstock show. I just got the fourth one ready for finish. It is my Josie small jumbo model. Originally I planned to do another Unlimited Series one but, for variety's sake I decided to do a standard model. I think it will be good to have a guitar to point to and say, "These are the features you get with the base price". I feel I give a lot in my base price so I should show it!

We have Indian Rosewood back and sides with a Western Red Cedar soundboard. On this model an unbound sound port is included in the base. When I have it finished I'll walk through everything else a base price Josie comes with.

Sound ports come standard on a Josie? [emoji79]

Mark

Please do not forget to include a 100% mind blowing playing experience when you list the bonus features included in your base price.

Mark, I find I rather like a subtle look, over a long term. Don't get me wrong, the quilted maple is gorgeous, but I find I always return to something a bit more toned down. My experience with Ovangkol has only been on Taylors, and I haven't been overly impressed. Having played a guitar or two of your crafting makes me very excited to hear what that wood has the potential to sound like!

I have made enough of each of my models that certain features seem to really shine on different models. I added the elevated fretboard as standard on the Penelope because it is just more comfortable to play with it.
The soundport has been a consistent addition to the Josie and it should come with one.

How do you feel the soundport on a Josie functions compared to a soundport on a Greta? What is it about the slightly bigger body that makes the soundport particularly shine for your SJ model?

I think guitars are generally beautiful instruments to start out with. A subtler guitar design can really show off the lines of a guitar. I really like that look too.
I also love the look of wood which a guitar can show off wonderfully. However it’s not hard to go really wrong with either look.
I am looking forward to getting strings on that Ovangkol Josie. From what I’ve seen so far I feel I’m safe keeping my expectations high.

I think the geometry of the bodies has something to do with it. Although the lower bout of the Josie is only about 3% wider, the waist and upper bout are almost 10% wider. The Josie tends to be held more vertically while the Greta tends to lean in a bit more. So the sound port shows up a bit more on the guitar that points away from the player more.
I could also speculate about the relationship between sound hole locations and relation to the position of waist but, that would be tough to nail down.

Well I’ll try to get some soundclips up for the guitars I’ll be bringing to the show.

On the all mahogany Josie that Mark made for me, we went with a Manzer wedge where the top depth of the guitar is a bit thinner than the bottom for shoulder comfort. Also changes the angle at which you would hear the sound port.

Thanks for commenting ukejon. It’s true the geometry of a wedge can help you hear what is coming off the top better.
