Default Shubb 12 String Capo With Compensated Pad?

I have emailed Shubb about having them produce a compensated pad for their 12 string capos.
So far I have not heard back from them about the idea.

Wade form this forum tells me that Shubb may still be shut down due to the virus.

Meanwhile, If any of you are like me and would like to see Shubb make a 12 string capo with a compensated pad, please try to contact them about it.
Strength in numbers!

What would the compensation do? String gauge differences in the pairs? The pad is currently pretty soft.

Here is a good video showing how the new G7th Newport capo with compensated pad works.

All Shubb needs to do is compensate their pads to compete with this new and great idea.
Yes they would have to deal with copyright laws but it sure would be nice to have a Shubb 12 string compensated capo.

Why wait for Shubb, when the product already exists?

Here's a couple of user reviews for this product, which has actually been out for over two years:

I am a big fan of Shubb Capos.
If they were to make a compensated pad for their 12 string version, it would be as good or better than the G7th Newport IMHO.

I hope that they will offer the compensated sleeve/pad in the near future.
I know that I would buy it.

I have one of the Newports.

I only have one 12-string it works on, and that's an old 70's Guild.

Every other one I can't adjust it tight enough. Even with the screw bottomed out it's too loose on my Taylor, Rainsong, and Larrivee.

I'd love to have a compensated pad like the G7 on a Shubb

Hey AZLiberty,

When I got my G7th Newport, I did not know that G7th previously made a Newport without the compensated pad, which was introduced with the 2018 model and stated on the package "Compensated String Pad". So I would ask you if you if you got one of the newer models with "Compensated String Pad" on the package. It doesn't say anywhere on my capo that it has this, but mine does have the slight sawtooth on the pad.

I ask because I have 2 Taylors, and the capo works perfectly on both of them, at least up to the 7th fret. And Taylors are known to stick to their specs, in this case, say 1+7/8 inch wide fretboard on their 12 strings. Not having a previous Newport, I have no idea what it's like. If yours doesn't work, you might want to contact G7th, as they seem to have a easy replacement policy.

And it wouldn't hurt to mention the exact models on which it does not work.

I like Shubb too. But, G7th is a better mousetrap for 12 strings.

Yes, it's the compensated pad. Taylor GA3-12. It will work on the 3rd fret down, but the neck is two thin on the 1st two frets.

It literally will not close enough to clamp down properly.

The Rainsong neck is too thin just about everywhere. Works fine on the old "baseball bat" necked Guild.

AZLiberty,

Sorry. Figured it was worth the question.

Probably because if Shubb does it, the capo’d will sell at $20-25 rather than $50 and up for a G7th.
The Paige is only $20. It also works fairly well.
But it is a pain to work with.

Full disclosure: I have both a G7th and a Paige.
I’m considering pulling the compensating pads off the Paige and using it only for six string.
I like the G7th that much.

I used the Paige twelve string capo with the extra bands for the octave strings, and it works OK, bit it is a bit fiddly to get the bands in the right places. Now I have a pair of G7 capo's with the sawtooth pads. (Didn't need a second one but a fellow forum member had one for sale used at a good price, and I pounced). It works fine on six strings too BTW.

Shubb sells replacement sleeves, which are available through Elderly for $1 each. Seems like you could easily just get a replacement sleeve and make your own twelve string capo. Shubb is located in Sonoma County, and California is still on lock down (for the most part) so they may not be operating at the moment. Hard to believe that a capo company is not considered "essential".

I recall seeing a YouTube video a few months ago where someone took an inexpensive capo and made a compensated pad using his 3D printer.

Made a noticeable difference. If you know someone who has a 3D printer give it go. You can purchase material that is pliable and yet stand up to the pressure of a capo.

There is probably a patent that would constrain Shubb from releasing a compensated pad. I also prefer the mechanics of the Shubb.

Im with L20A on this. I prefer the Shubb capos- The G7th 12 string capo is excellent, I like mine.
If Shubb made one, I would buy it.
I have a variety of capos, G7th and shubb are my favorites, but given the choice, I always pick the shubb.
