OK, let's get this thing built then. Here's some shots of routing for binding and the end wedge.

Picking out some appropriate end wedge material

Getting the decorative Koa piece in

Purfling (now a verb) the top

Scraping the now installed Koa bindings and purfling

And...cleaning it all up!

Hitting the home stretch.

Really nice looking guitar Jim! I love the Rosette and the purfling a lot.

Those Kinnaird boys certainly know how to build a guitar...AND Ryan ain't bad either

Thanks Woody. I've got a special guitar coming up, and I'm not quite sure what to do with it. I may ask my AGF buddies for some advice - stay tuned.

Continuing on with the build, I thought I would show some parts construction right before we see the whole thing together. Heres some pics of a bridge being made.

First we lay out some of the pin holes in the African Blackwood bridge and then we cut the whole blank to shape.

Then Steve comes into the carving process and shapes the wings, routs the saddle slot, and fine sands and waxes it. It ends up looking a lot like this.

Then to final fit it to the guitar body, we fit the body of it to the top by sanding the bottom to the exact curvature of the top.

But every once in a while, just for Tom B'Sox's sake, we get called away to deal with something in the house.

Then OSHA gets called out and we have to have some supervision during the build process.

Everything's checked out, so maybe we'll get some full body shots tomorrow.

OK--you guys are freaking me out. That snake was in the house?!

This build is looking really awesome--love all the wood choices.

Looks like a wonderful supervisor too--good to have someone to keep you guys in line!

Keep up the good work!

Yes, a door got left open and Mr. Texas Rat Snake was searching for some relief from the Texas summer heat. Thankfully my herpetologist friend lives only a couple miles away. He walked in, snatched it up, and started cleaning its face with his fingers. Apparently this is one of the more docile snakes out there - and they're good at keeping rodent population down. We put him back in the backyard. No sign of him again.

Well don't show it to her! Actually in 25 years of living in the deepest woods in Texas, this was a first. I can readily assure you that Texas snakes typically go out of their way to avoid you.

Ok, it's time to fit this guy together.

First, we tried to convince Jim about the benefits of a square neck, but he was fixed upon a traditionally carved neck, so Steve got to it.

Getting down to the end of a soft-V style carve, Steve is fine tuning with scrapers.

Here's the chunk of Mastodon tusk that we used to cut out a nut blank.

Fitting the neck and the bridge in preparation for the finishing process.

Kind of rough lighting this day, but the guitar is all put together - ready to spray finish!

Exciting stuff ahead. Thanks for watching.

That is looking very good. The black in the fingerboard, and the bridge really sets off the purfling and binding colors.

Well, in one magical day, all the finish was applied and here are some quick shots of the results. Of course, my smartphone does not capture the full richness of the wood. Just imagine.

Italian top:

Panamanian back (sorry about the lighting):

We'll get some better pictures soon. Now I got to go get a neck on.
