Nobody will have heard of him, but the late Sam Mitchell was a friend and drinking accomplice of mine whose demons sadly got to him far too soon.
His resonator playing was little short of stunning, and his resume of artists he anonymously worked with is equally impressive; Stefan Gossman, Duck Baker, Bert Jansch, Rod Stewart etc, etc.
We used to hang out in the Bricklayer's Arms pub in Putney (London), a sleazy, smoke-stained venue for the local musicians and villains, playing pinball for hours on end. Highest authenticated score of the week won you a bottle of Scotch...

Oh man, Andrew, thanks for reminding me of Sam!

I remember him, particularly at the Twickenham Blues club which was at one time in the Crown and before that (?) in some place near the ITV studios on the river.

I just clicked on your first link and got that shiver down my spine like I used to when Sam played live.

He was younger than us I think, but was an old soul, and miles ahead of us, in music , singing and playing blues guitar.

Good looking, "cool", and talented, but always had a cigarette in his mouth. He died of COPD aged 56. I guess he pretty much lived the blues player's life.

Was it Skyport Ade who ran that club? i played with Jo-Anne Kelly there one night.
