Default Recording Trivia for the day!

Who were the first band to use Dolby (Dolby A, model 301) to record an album?

Try to answer without the Internet.

Extra points:
1. Year
2. Album
3. Studio and location

Good luck!

Bob

Default A Guess

Aloha Bob,

Love these trivia questions.

Just a guess. Was that "Urgent" by Foreigner in 1981?

I didn't Google it. I just seem to remember that for some reason.

Nope. This goes back farther into recording history.

I know Ray Dolby was a fan of the 60's San Francisco music scene. Putting two and two together I'm gonna guess either Santana, Grateful Dead, Neil Young or Jefferson Airplane?

Good try but right decade, wrong location. Keep trying.

Oh, this must have been harder than I thought. I'll start dropping hints. Dolby Laboratories was founded in the U.K.

Sorry, no. Another hint: the Beatles did fail an audition at the location where it was first used.

hmmmm, I really have no clue but before I throw in another name I'll let others chime in.

It goes without saying that we've all heard of this band or individual, correct?

They are a very big band. The studio was a very big studio. The year was a very lovely year. The album was a showcase for a completely different way of balancing the stereo sound stage from the then-common practice of placing completely isolated instruments on opposite sides of the mix.

Sorry again. The lovely year was '67.

Another guess, the Who? ('67 is too early for Led Zeppelin, which was going to be my next guess).
