Help me decide...electronics edition for D-18E
Hi all,
I spent about 10 hours visiting three different shops the other day. Thought I would walk out with a Gibson at the end of the day, as I do love them. They seemed ok, but only a Sj-100 and one J-45 seemed pretty good. On the other hand, each shop had one D-18 each, and all three seemed amazing to me. I have decided that is what I am getting based on those three. But, I do want electronics. Of the three choices I could order, which do you like the best? Why? (Yes, I know all of this is subjective, I just would like to hear from people way more experienced than I.) FishmanŽ AuraŽ VT Enhance LR Baggs Anthem Fishman F1 Aura + which is in the D-18E Retro version. Thanks for any ideas, thoughts you have on this... dh

I would buy the guitar without electronics, purchase a K&K from Shoreline - or the vendor of your choice and take it to a luthier for the install and a check of the set-up.

The three you are looking at are all good pickups.
I have a JJB in my D18. Its the same thing as a K & K. I would recommend you use a pre amp with that type of pickup.

I put a Fishman Ellipse Aura in my new-to-me '14 Martin 000-18, whic came w/no pickup. I have a first year Martin GPCPA3 Preforming Artist series with the full Aura F1 in it and it's the best live pickup I've encountered - had Anthems and other undersaddle systems, but the Aura is in a league of it's own - the mic model tech for each individual guitar makes the guitar sound great in any open mic, plug-n-play situation I've encountered. I also have a DTar Mama Bear pre-amp which seems to be the forerunner to modeled guitar sound blended into the live guitar, the Aura is a home run.

I had a Martin GPC28e with integrated FishmanAura Enhance. Really nice sounding electronics when played through my Gentzler Acoustic Array. Not quite “my guitar, just louder”, but very close. Very clean natural sound.

Anthem. You will not need a pre-amp, but some EQ is helpful with any acoustic/electric. It can make a huge difference.
