Arpeggios with unplayed strings in the middle
I have a few of these in a couple of songs, right now I'm working on Al Petteway's "River" again. How would you play 0U02 where the U is the A string, not muted with an X, but unplayed and the notation indicates it (and the mp3) as being a strum/arpeggio of the other 3 strings.
Muting the A string with a finger isn't working right away but just might take time, but I hear that slight "thump". Immediate gratification is coming from hitting the low E and using the index on the right hand to up stroke the d and g string. How would you do it?

No its, this version at about 9 seconds...
The "D", second measure. I usually just play it as one beat, but I'm losing the fullness of it, especially in The Parting Glass where its done also.

Not a strum. A fast three note arpeggio. Also tab not matching notes played.

Barry, Al's doing what a lot of fingerstyle players do here, he's sort of "rippling" the notes. It's just a very fast arpeggio. This is an example of a technique that's easier to demonstrate than to describe. You play it fingerstyle, thumb on the 6th string, 1st and 2nd fingers plucking the 4th and 3rd strings. You don't really pluck the notes individually (at least I don't), it's more like your hand "rolls" off the strings, creating the ripple/arppegio. To my ear, the notes in the tab are correct. There *could* be an A in there (5th string, 2nd fret), but I don't really hear it. But Al often fingers full chords even if he's not playing all the notes, so it may even be there sympathetically.

I agree with Doug that I would play that as a roll with thumb, index, middle.

Yeah, "roll" is another good word for it, tho people also use that term to mean a banjo roll type of thing, which is related, but different (slower...)

Ascending arpeggios one can do very fast. Often you can place all the fingers on the strings to be played like you were going
to do a block chord but instead peel upward. Descending brisk arpeggios take more practice.

Ok great thanks! I had a feeling it wasn't done with a thumb down stroke.

Agreed. Close to a triple stop but with a quick succession.

I have to work on the rolls. Sometimes they are there for me, sometimes not. Daily practice of them is much needed.

Several songs I have been working on recently have them and like you Barry, sometimes I nail them and sometimes I don’t. They sure can enhance a song in the right places.
