It's been 7 weeks. I went to Orthopedics today and saw the PA. My thumb is considered "healed" (it will continue to heal more) and I no longer have to wear the splint thingy on my thumb. She said I can get back to playing guitar and dulcimer, on a gradual basis. I'm so excited.

I'm sorry about your accident and hope you heal quickly. What an unfortunate situation for you! Get well!

I (almost) feel your pain, I hope you heal quicker than a month or two!

"Almost":

I was walking up to the driveway yesterday. I heard a CRACK!
The sun was in just the right place, and I could see the shadow of the
large limb that had just broken off of a big oak tree right over my head
as it headed my way. I moved my hand over my head and the limb hit
my hand and bloodied (but didn't really hurt) it.

Later I was stripping some Romex and I banged my other hand on the
tool chest real hard.

Both times I thought about injury and guitars ... but...
"It's also interesting how much you use your thumb ... in day-to-day activities."
A hand injury is about a lot more than guitars...

Great news! 49 days is a long time to go without, how's it been?

Not too bad, but I've not been able to fingerpick all that time, which is what I do. I'm really looking forward to getting back to it, but I will need a slightly larger thumbpick.

So play some dulcimer in the meantime and try to keep your callouses maintained.

Hang in there.

That's what I did. Going to be fingerpicking again starting the next couple of days. Yay!

Hitchhiking should be a breeze though eh? 👍

Years ago, I crushed and pulled the end off my ring finger on my left hand - it had to be sewn back on. I asked the Dr about playing a guitar- he replied; you should have thought about that before you did it
I had to wear a big bandage for a couple of weeks- it was so big I couldn't get my watch on so I started wearing it on my right side- and still do. For years the finger was tender(?), the nail grew to be kind of bulbous, not unsightly but noticeable and I couldn't use it which became an extended period of my off in the off and on cycle of playing- now the nail isn't straight and I have to pay close attention when fretting so as not to touch the next string with it-

Haha, when the PA walked in for my last appointment on Friday, her comment was, "so, are you ready to get back to hitch-hiking?" I said, "I'm ready to get back to everything else!"

Ouch....I'm sorry to hear that. At least it's encouraging that you got back to playing at some level. I can't complain. A couple months away from playing is nothing, really, and it teaches me the value of the ability to play. So many others lose it, to never regain it. I'm very fortunate.

I have to stop doing this, though. Years ago, a tuft fracture of my middle finger, now a tuft fracture of my thumb. I have to figure out a way to keep my fingers out of the way.

I at least didn't break or fracture anything- not sure how I'd handle that at the age I am now- I was a kid when I hurt my ring finger- now, not so much- that was 50 years ago

My oldest sons FIL is a wood worker- par exellance, I'll add- he cut off part of his thumb on a table saw -

Oh wow, that's not good. We were using a buzz saw on our tractor 3PH when my accident occurred, but it wasn't the saw that did the damage....just my stupidity.
