Default Peghead almost ready for trip to see Larry ...

More work on the neck and peghead. Steve is leveling the back of the peghead and bringing it to the desired thickness. Second photo has the backplate veneers added. That's one juicy backplate!

This last shot for today shows Ryan bending the Ebony bindings.

Coming right along Dennis....not to poke a hornet's nest, but does this neck have to be shipped out for the torch inlay on the headstock?

Looks as if the back plate's glued on with washing up liquid. Of course it's not, but what is it?

I'm not certain Dave but it looks like epoxy to me (you know ... the mix together 2 part kind). Maybe Steve or Ryan will weigh in.

Thanks Dave for checking the thread out and cigarfan's right. It's a two part epoxy. I guess in the clamping process some air got inside the glue and it's trying to foam out - or it might have hydrophobia.

No, Dave is right. Dawn Ultra, for Dennis deserves the best on this guitar.

Actually, my thoughts ran along this line, that if this neck is lost in transit, at least we won't have lost more of that too-expensive epoxy.
Mahogany and Ebony and Bloodwood grow on trees and are always so underfoot.
But this glue...sheesh! We can't be slathering it around here and there willy nilly as if it were replaceable.
And then, see, when Dennis becomes weary of this backplate (as all guitarists eventually do) he can gently glide it off and replace it with something else.
Just replace it with more Dawn as per factory specs.

I hope this helps...

P.S.-- disregard Ryan's nonsense.

Me thinks Steve has been working too hard on recreating this neck and peghead!

Default The way we were ...

Once Steve has ramped the slots for strings I believe we are back to where we were before the USPS stepped in. This neck/peghead will shortly be making it's way to Larry while we all hold our breath!

The famous Kinnaird peghead shape.

Peghead sideview. This is going to look so good under finish with those Alessi tuning machines attached. Oh yeah!

Drilling the tuner holes.

Routing the slots.

Routed for binding and ready to have the string ramps cut (and an all-wood torch inlaid).

Ugh...let's speak of other things. Like: how odd it is to do a duplicate neck--especially so very close together. Crazy practice perhaps, but we always try to vary the neck on each guitar. Slightly, perhaps, but changes nonetheless. But to expend effort to make the same thing is a bit unique for us.

Larry did ask what we would do IF the original turns up somehow? Probably build another guitar for Dennis!

(Someone pick up Dennis from the floor)

Actually, that might be nice. To get a totally reworked body to go with the recreated neck. Two geetars for the price of one ... how could I go wrong?

Default Bag that puppy up!

No worries ... Steve has recovered. We haven't picked out the back and sides for the second guitar yet but I'm sure he will select something good!

End of day yesterday had the peghead bound and purfled (if that's even a word?), nut slot is cut and the slots ramped. Time to put our trust in a shipper. Hmmm ... who may that be? Hmmm!
