These pictures are nice and all but you can't tell what a guitar sounds like by looking at a picture

To that end, this clip is awe-inspiring. Unfortunately you have to play that well to sound the same, but certainly the guitar does not hurt

233 Butler, the name of that song, is the address of RetroFret Vintage Guitars in Brooklyn - a great shop run by a great group of folks. Julian Lage is a friend of the shop, hence the name. He was a big fan of a flattop guitar I ended up getting - an old 12-fret Gibson L-1. He's amazing.

Lage's solo version of "233 Butler" is near perfection. What a player he is. Touch, tone, taste, note choice- one of my favorites, though I'll never get anywhere close to his level of mastery.

A few years back, I made a pair of 7-string arch tops, one of which was for Michael Maguire. Here are a few pictures prior to the guard and pickup being installed. You can hear Michael play the guitar at http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/mmaguire or http://michaelmaguireguitar.blogspot.ca

When I was purchasing my Gibson Johnny Smith (not P90 pickups), I tried it through an AER. I think it was called something along the lines of Compact 60 or something with "60" in the name. It really sounded good. When I got home and tried it through my Genz Benz Compak 300, it didn't sund "right" and I could not get the sound I wanted. I ended up getting a used Henriksen JazzAmp "Convertible II" head with matching JazzAmp 8" cabinet and that sounded "right". My Johnny Smith has the original pickups in it, but I think the point is that you have to try it to see if it will work for you. Some amplifiers will, some won't. I don't have a ready explanation for the "why", but maybe somebody else here does. The Genz Benz is a very nice amp (I have one with the 10" speaker), and I use it for my acoustic instruments, but it just didn't sound right with my archtop. The problem was that the Genz Benz with the Johnny Smith lacked the warmth I expect from an amplified archtop.

Did you get one of the round-hole L-50's?

Did you see the L-7c they have there? I love that guitar.

Close! The GAS is strong in those round-hole L-50s. I must be cautious. If I go in there once more, I'll probably break down and pull the trigger. By the way, someone bought that L-7C; it has a hold/do not touch slip between the strings. The black L-12P is still there.

Pretty easy on the eyes for a 79 year old, wasn't she?
Dang, that is one fine looking guitar. I would love to have that. guitar:
