In Ear Monitors?
Hello all;
Looking for opinions and experiences from those who use IEM's. We use Avioms in a pop/rock band format. I've tried the Shure E2 and wasn't happy with them ( no low end) Thanks in advance. Steve

Steve,
We just ordered the Carvin in-ear system for our Praise Band. I've read a lot of good things about it, and it's a lot less expensive than the Shure system. I'll be sure to let you know what we think, once we've had a chance to put it through its paces. Rob

I have the Carvin system but haven't used it yet--Susan & I haven't played any place that floor wedges did not avail us.

Without getting into specific brands, our trio switched to in-ears several years ago and we haven't looked back. Neither the bass player nor I could really hear a floor monitor; the in-ears are much better for us, and there are no feedback worries once you ring out the venue.

I have the E3's and they seem to work fine. I want the E5's but don;'t have the $$$$$ for them at the moment. They are supposed to have better bass response, having dual drivers and a crossover built in.

For vocals, I think that just ONE ear is better than using two ears with the monitors . . . not sure if it matters as much for instrumentalists.

My Carvin system is a transmitter with two belt-pack receivers and two sets of Koss in-ear buds (similar to the Shure E2s). It might take a third receiver; have to check the specs. I would use the earmolds I had made for my Sensaphonics custom earplugs and buy a set of Shure E3s that can be custom-fitted to them, and give the Kosses to my bandmates. I once attended a demo using the E2s (with disposable foam plugs)--everyone in the band and in the audience used them in both ears with the mains completely off, and it sounded like a studio mix! Now, they were a rock band rather than acoustic, and Shure urges that in-ears be used in both ears, with built-in compression to prevent spikes, in order to maximize hearing protection. In a purely acoustic band with lower SPLs, I suppose taking out one monitor to better hear the mains is ok, but unless you're running a mono mix and both your ears have equal acuity you will not get as accurate a mix as you would if you wore them bilaterally.

I went from e2s to e5s not long ago. There's a tremendous difference. I actually like my e5s better than my Grado reference series phones.

That seems to be a common opinion I've read. They are expensive. What about Livewires? [url]www.livewiresforyou.com Thanks Steve

WE use the aviom system at church and I use Bose ear buds. I don't know much about them other than that is what I had and they seem to work very nicely. I do hate being tethered to the mic stand. I think wireless would be a great addition. MIke

I use the Shure E-5's.
they are the best, hands down. You get what you pay for. PLEASE READ THIS! Use both. Using only 1 will cause hearing loss / damage. It takes some getting use to, but it is imperative.
