Thanks, Dave! The 4:1 tuners on my 2018 Rickard are identical looking to the new Cyclone 10:1 tuners. All my banjos have 4:1 ratio tuners and although the 4:1 ratio has been the long-time standard Planetary ratio, it just seems like the new Rickard Cyclone 10:1 tuners are a dream come true for banjoists. Looks like I'll be getting a set from Rickard.

Thanks! I've been thinking of a Cedar Mountain Jubilo in cherry. I like the design simplicity and the company's good reputation. Definitely on my radar.

I have a new Rickard Maple Ridge with the 10:1 tuners. Great tuners. I have a Dogwood and a Pisgah with Gotoh tuners, and an Ome with Planetary tuners. All great banjos, but I prefer the Rickard tuners. The Maple Ridge is easier to tune, and it stays in tune longer.

Baldwin gave Ode such a bad reputation for slipping quality Chuck wanted to do another' startup...the name Ode was taken and Baldwin Odes were developing a bad reputation.
So Chuck named his new company Ome

Saturday afternoon's fun trio, including recently-acquired Takamine EF360S TT. Let me add that the stage-ready Takamine EF360S TT compares very favorably tonewise with the much costlier Huss & Dalton TD-R. IMHO, a player wouldn't be at a disadvantage with having to use the Takamine EF360S TT in any playing situation.

Huss & Dalton TD-R/Vega Old Tyme Wonder 12-inch/Takamine EF360S TT

I now own two Wildwood banjos and they have quickly become my absolute favorites. The Hoyt I had made is great too, but these Wildwoods are phenomenal. I wish so badly that I could find a tenor Wildwood, but there were not that many made and they are nearly impossible to find.

Default ODE Banjos Are Back!

I just received an email from The Banjo Studio notifying customers that ODE Banjos are back and are being built by OME Banjos, and whose owner Charles Ogsbury is the original founder of ODE Banjos back about 1960. The ODE banjos are of simpler construction than the more expensive OME banjos but they're all made in Colorado. Currently, there are two ODE models, The Magician ($1595 list) and The Sundance ($1395 list) Now, if ODE would make a long-neck 5-string, with the same peghead shape with planetary tuners as the original, and with the new wooden rim, I'd be a player!

Interesting, but I'm not fully comprehending why Chuck Ogsbury would want the ODE name back in his stable after what Baldwin did to it, but it was his original baby. All this really seems to do is add a layer of confusion to the OME branding that he and Tonya have worked so hard to achieve.

I think followers of the OME brand would be perfectly happy to purchase a lower-tier banjo with the OME name on it. Brands are associated by name and watering down your name by having sub-catagories doesn't make a lot of sense to me, but what do I know.

I'm thinking that a long neck OME with the throwback design and at a lower price point would do just fine.

OME was building the UTEs, which are lower level banjos. There is a theory, among brand specialists (consultants who coach businesses in building their brands) that you should not use the premium name (OME) to market a lower priced product. An example would be Toyota and Lexus.

I think that the ODE name still carries some "goodwill", and maybe they have decided to resurrect it and replace the UTE brand. With any of these things- only time will tell. They make a line of refined OME banjos, but folks like Pisgah are captivating players. Patrick and his staff at Pisgah make some great instruments, and they won't break the bank.To be honest, I have two Pisgahs (one a custom that I bought directly from them made entirely from persimmon) that are more "organic" feeling than the OME I have. Don't get me wrong, I love the OME, but it is fairly upscale (Walnut Flora 12"). If I were going out to play at the farmer's markets like other summers I would be packing the Pisgah Appalachian or my Dogwood, not the OME.

Dogwood (Mike Chew) also makes a great, "organic-feel" banjo. In the morning I start my day playing banjo, drinking my first cup of coffee, switching between my second Pisgah (a 12" walnut Appalachian) and the Dogwood.

I took a look at the new ODEs on the Banjo Studio website, and they look like a mashup of the Pisgah Woodchuck and the buffalo nickel-inlayed UTES. Interesting. The Utes run a bit lower at around $800/$900.

Default Pisgah 12" Walnut Tubaphone 5-String Open-Back Banjo Custom

This is my review from about 3 years ago:

See new thread about receiving this Pisgah 12" Walnut Tubaphone at: http://www.acousticguitarforum.com/f...d.php?t=474532

Here is my follow-up for this thread: Hi Folks, on this thread awhile back I solicited information about various brands of 5-string open-back banjos as I was thinking of getting one. After sifting through the suggestions, I settled on commissioning a banjo from Patrick Heavner at Pisgah Banjo Company in Asheville, North Carolina. I received my banjo a couple of weeks ago and love its tone, feel and build quality. I opted for my banjo to be crafted with a 12-inch Walnut rim with a Tubaphone tone ring, a Walnut neck with a Persimmon scooped fingerboard, a HawkTail tailpiece and Traditional Wire Armrest. The company photos show my banjo prior shipping at which time I requested Patrick add a railroad spike at the 10th fret, so 7th, 9th and 10th frets are spiked. I highly recommend Pisgah Banjos as an easy to deal with, high-quality banjo company with reasonable pricing.
