Although my favorite TR song is probably the England Dan (aka the late Dan Seals) and John Ford Coley version of Love is the Answer...

Health issues? Other than a cold that affected his voice during the start of the virtual 'tour' he did based in Chicago, I am not aware of any 'issues'.

The Go-Go's were HUGE in the early to mid 80's. Billboard #1 stuff, 7 million records sold, etc, etc.
According to Wiki, "the first, and to date only ... all-female band writing its own material and playing its own instruments" to reach #1. Shoot, at least they're actually a rock band, unlike so many other recent inductees. I say what the heck - give 'em the dumb award. They've earned it. As for Todd, lifelong fan here. All I can say is "about frickin' time"! |

As for the Go Gos, while they were never a huge band in the UK, they are at least respected as a rock band by many here, who inspired others. Herein lies the problem: the list these days is not about rock, nor about inspiring others over any length of time. The HoF website has a subtitle on the Inductees page, which reads "THESE ARE THE PEOPLE WHO SHAPED THE HISTORY OF ROCK & ROLL." And yet, it took 10 years for Led Zeppelin to be recognised, 20 for Black Sabbath and 30 years for Deep Purple to get there. But look at some of the recent inductees - Whitney Houston? Tupac? NWA? And then there are some of the groups who have got there - much as I like The Cars and Hall & Oates, their influence on Rock 'n' Roll is pretty limited, especially when you consider that Judas Priest and Iron Maiden still aren't there. All this pales into insignificance, though, if you watch this year's Brit Awards, the UK equivalent of the Grammys. Best British group - Little Mix??!!!! |

Couldn't name a song he's ever done. Can play half of Green Day's library. YMMV.
Overall I would say nice class, but I don't think Hall of Fame when I hear the name "Todd Rundgren". |

TR only had a few hits as a solo artist and with Nazz and Utopia, but as song-writer he's up there with the best of them. He was also a very early adopter of technology, but, it is as a bandleader, arranger and producer, especially with Utopia, that he really raised the bar - listen to 1977's 'Ra', which was recorded with the principle of if it couldn't be played live with no backing tapes, it didn't go on the record. Then listen to Meat Loaf's 'Bat Out of Hell', one of the most revered records of all time - he arranged it, produced it and Utopia were all over it. Even if you are not a Meat Loaf fan, which I am not, the clip in the Classic Albums series about the motorbike is a real eye-opener.

I was very much of fan of the early TR. I loved the sound of those Nazz LPs, and as a songwriter the young TR was very good at writing lyrics that used natural sounding expressions and syntax and making them sing-able. It's the early song from his career that more people know, but if you take the lyrics of "Hello It's Me" it seems so unassuming and "unpoetic" yet it works magnificently as a song.
I also agree with the comments upthread that he's underappreciated as person who wanted to integrate computer technology into his stuff fairly early, and while his resume as a producer isn't as extensive or full of multiple massive hit records as some, it's adds to his career.

Todd has contributed in many different capacities to the compendium of Rock and Roll starting in the 1970s and continuing through the present. His many contributions have already been mentioned so I won't reiterate except to say that with the exception of Sir Paul and The Stones, I can't think of anyone in the field who has stood the test of time as consistently. Many of his songs have been mentioned but who among us has never heard this TR song???
