I am as curious as i am suspect of videos like these.
Now i don't own a loudbox so those familiar with these amps.
i see the wireless unit plugged into the amp.
i am assuming that's the input to a channel,
but i also see an xlr plugged into the back
and what looks like a 1/4 plugged into the
back as well. what are these inputs/outputs??
I also see two dots on the soundboard of his guitar on the
upper bout just above the 18th fret or so . What are these?

He's mic'ing his amp, and that XLR is running out the DI port on the back to whatever is recording the video. I don't know what the heck those holes, or dots are on his guitar!

I believe the dots are just fret markers. Like Jkilgour200 pointed out, it makes sense to record one channel of mic and the other of direct out from whatever stereo recorder he used. While this sounds quite a bit better than other audio of this pickup that are on YouTube, I expect that it is an accurate sample of the sound one can expect.

Dual systems with a magnetic pickup like this tend to sound really good on fingerstyle guitar.

Default Skysonic Wireless Guitar Pickup

Well the pickup came today. I replaced the M80 in my DX1 Martin, checked to make sure it made sound, then headed to an open mic with it. At the open mic, I lent it to a couple of people so I could hear it out in the bar as well as from the musician’s perspective.

I do like the sound of it better than the M80. There is a 1/8” jack on the pickup, and I plugged the cable from the LR Baggs endpin jacket into it to see if it would work as a standard wired pickup. It did, so you don’t have to use it as a wireless if you want to just plug it in. This will also be handy when I practice with my Tonewood Amp. It did not come with the endpin jack and cable, but I would highly recommend getting one.

The blend of the mic and magnetic pickup is very nice. The mic is mounted inside the pickup facing back towards the bridge. I have no idea if it is shock mounted. The volume controls for the magnetic pickup are independent. You can dial in as much or as little of each as you want.

At the open mic one guy who borrowed it was strumming very hard and I heard pretty heavy distortion, but that may have just been the mixer preamp being overdriven with the amount of gain I had dialed in. It sounded great the rest of the night.

The power switches on both the pickup and the receiver turn on instantly with a button press, but to turn them off you have to hold the same button for three seconds. This is fine on the pickup, but on the receiver that means that is almost certain to turn on accidentally if you put it in a guitar gig bag pocket or in loose with other equipment. I would prefer if turning it on required a long press of the power button as well, at least on the receiver.

The quality of both pieces seems to be good. Time will tell how rugged they actually are.

I’ll report more as I play with it more, but my initial impression is very good. I absolutely loved not being tethered by either a cable or a transmitter on my guitar strap.

Thanks for the report. I see the master volume switch is on the bottom,
do you have to take it out to turn it on? Also, do you pop the pickup out
of the guitar to charge it? How long does it take to charge? It sounds
like there may be some logistics hassles.

If it sounds as good as you say, it may be worthwhile to run it wired
mostly, and use the wireless for those 'travelling light' gigs. For me,
it was nice to know you have 'wired' as a backup.

If possible, next step is to make sure it's not the pickup distorting on the
hard strumming.

I am considering the FS-1 and some other mag/mic blends like
the Schertler AG-6, RE Blend, etc.

Thanks again for pioneering this.

Yes, they have had wired versions for quite a while. The wireless version isn’t even on their website yet:

Default Skysonic Wireless Guitar Pickup

This is the cable assembly needed to give the F1 the option of being used plugged in instead of wireless. I just ordered one to replace the one I borrowed from my M80 (which I believe I am going to sell now). I’m assuming the wiring is correct because it seems to work perfectly.

That shows a stereo (TRS) plug - but I guess the output from the Skysonic is only mono, so only the tip is deployed??

if i currently use the m80 this is just plug and play
correct?
How does the mic sound by itself?
This is tempting because it's so resonably priced.
Look forward to hearing your take on it
after you've used it for awhile. And whether you can
get rid of the hard strum distortion. could it be a matter
if dialing in less mic??

Yes, you just unplug the M80 and plug the same 1/8” plug into the one on the F1 instead.

There are samples of the magnetic pickup and the mic both separately and together in the Thai review video a few posts back. The sound on those sound samples sounds the same as what I am getting.

To me the mic sounds as good as any mounted inside the guitar. I like the sound best with both the mic and the magnetic pickup turned all the way up. As compared to the M80, I find it less susceptible clothing rustle and handling noise while still maintaining a good body resonance sound.

There is a power switch inside the soundhole. The top switch is just a “standby” switch. With the power on and the pickup in standby, the M80 output jack still works like a regular output jack. I expect that leaving it in standby mode would drain the battery. I don’t believe that there is any power switching going on when you plug in a guitar cable.

I usually always use some sort of guitar preamp or body resonance pedal when I play. This F1 sounds really good without it. Normally I cut 200 Hz really hard. Last night I found myself using a much flatter EQ than I am used to.

Are there any switches that are not accessible when this pup is installed.
you know like the active/passive switch on the m80. ? And does plugging it in
negate the wireless aspect or could they both be run simultaneously??
Is The flatter response due to pole piece adjustment..
Also this is an unbalanced input . Have you tried plugging it into a di or preamp with xlr to a board.?
