What I wound up with and the total cost tax and all included.
Behringer U-Phoria UMC202HD $99 (new)
Audio-Technica AT2020 mic $75 (new)
A generic mic stand with a boom arm $26.25 (new)
10' xlr mic cable $9.00 (new)
Total tax and all $229.65
I already have the headphones and the laptop.

That will be a great setup to dip your toes into the waters of home recording.

I'll toss out that Avid has a free version of Pro Tools that might be a better option for you than Audacity, because it comes with some very usable plugins.

However you approach it, have fun.

One additional accessory you might consider that isn't all that expensive is a 'pop filter', particularly if you plan on doing vocals. It will help diminish plosive pops and and it helps protect the mic capsule from breath moisture.

This is one I found on Amazon. There may be better ones and maybe someone might suggest one that is reasonably priced, but this should work OK.

I did order a pop filter from Amazon. Mine is made like that one but was just a few dollars cheaper. Thank you

Chas007, there's a lot of helpful information in the stickied thread that will put you ahead of where many of us started. The videos were all selected from the thousands available on YouTube. Where possible, we looked for videos that would be particularly helpful to acoustic guitar players, although that wasn't possible in all cases. Once you get started, feel free to come back and pick our brains.

This is why I wanted to get the recording equipment.
This was recorded with my Galaxy A52 phone, about 18" from the guitar. I feel the sound is awful quality. It sounds like I'm covering the microphone part of the phone with my hand.

I believe he is saying because he was not happy with that phone recording, IS why he decided to go with an interface and mic .

I will second the Pro Tools "Intro" (Avids free version of PT) consideration suggestion.
You can record up to 8 audio tracks, 8 instrument tracks, and 8 midi tracks
and with 4 aux/folder tracks so for just basic guitar or guitar vocal it is quite usable

Your next $250 should be for two 2'x4'x4" gobos from ATS. (Actually less $$)

Initially I bought 2 and set them up as an inverted V in front of me. Big difference. I bought another one to create a sort of 3 sided cubicle, even better (more room for my mic stands too).

Once I moved everything to my basement to record its a different world. I just ordered 2 more to put on the sides/back as I feel necessary.

The room is everything.

Yes I'm saying I did not like the sound with my phone. I have not recorded with my new setup yet. There's going to be a learning curve and I can't decide if I'm going to sync the new recorded music with video or not. Just seems like more I'll have to learn.
Okay, I give up, what is a gobo?

A gobo is an old recording industry term for a free standing panel -- often an acoustic absorption panel, that can moved around in room --as opposed to being mounted on a wall
