Default MLB 2020 thread

Baseball kicks off in 4 days, July 23. 60 game season.

Who you rooting for? Will we make the playoffs with a World Series Champ?

Go Red Sox!

Indeed (except for the Cardinals part!)

Some noteworthy new rules:
- National League using the DH. Long overdue, imo;
-Pitchers must face at least 3 batters.
-Extra innings will have a runner starting on 2nd base.
-not to mention "no spitting"

and for Kerbie: "Let's go Mets!"

It'll be a horse race from the start.

I forgot about the 3 batters rule. That's a pre-covid rule which should speed up the game.

When it comes to baseball I will continue to be jaded but confess that it will be on in the background. I think that a shortened season will help level the playing field because the seasons up until this point have been a marathon. Financially and politically, baseball will continue to be a mess until people stop showering them with money. I'll follow my home town team here in Pittsburgh and through my cable bill they will have pirated my indirect support but I will no longer wear their swag.

Speaking of which, I think the trend of people "unplugging" from cable packages in favor of subscription to individual networks will likely be a bigger blow to the league than actually attending the games. Part of the reason the Pirates are run so miserly is because the ownership got its money from the print newspaper industry which is failing.

On the topic of the actual game itself, I think that with the COVID policy in place if a player tests positive (but is still asymptomatic) we're going to see teams placed at an immediate disadvantage to a degree that makes the 15 day DL for "shoulder stiffness" seem like a walk in the park in comparison.

In the case of my home town team, Gregory Palonco tested positive for COVID so he will not be playing for some time. The effect is immaterial since Palonco is injury prone (he literally trips over his own feet) and has not been a boon to the franchise that the previous GM had hoped.

Summary: the Pirates will likely officially concede that they are "rebuilding" since the entire league is on life support.

I’d like to see a team without much hope in a regular season put together a hot streak and win the World Series. Like the Giants or the Angels. Or the Phillies or the White Sox.

Short of that, Go Red Sox!

I wonder what happens if Mike Trout sits out the season and the Angles make the playoffs? Trout's only been in the playoffs once, 3 games back in '14.

Are players who sit out the season allowed to come back mid-season / late season if the want to?

Sayhey! Giants beat the A’s in their 1st game yesterday. The Giants also introduced the 1st female coach, and Kapler took a small step to being manager of the year by taking a knee with some of the players. Great stuff. After watching Washington once again embarrass itself in what has become the best part of its football season since Snyder, hurray for baseball, The Giants, and a stadium full of cardboard fans.

Neil, what do you think about the Pittsburgh Blue Jays? Looks like the Jays will play their home games at PNC park ... pending government approval.

The state of Pennsylvania has rejected this. So, Blue Jays still looking for a home. There was also talk of Baltimore, Buffalo (AAA affiliate) and Dunedan FL (spring training facility).
